Was doing some reading of one of my earliest FF books. Fly Rods and Fly Tackle published in 1885 Found a section on hook styles with a drawing of a barbless hook Found a comment on what he thinks of barbless hooks And here I thought that the barbless hooks I got in 1970 were a new thing. timjorourke Posted November 21, 2008 Share Posted November 21, 2008 It appear that the barbless hook in the books diagram has a shaft of metal that angles down from mid shaft across the gape. This extension would effectively lock a fishes mouth on the hook once the hook was set. Not a true barbless hook in the modern sense but pretty good at keeping weeds off.
