Harps Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 For the fish... Just so everybody is aware, the rainbow are spawning in the Crowsnest right now so watch where you walk. The redds look like cleaned patched of gravel/cobble, often teardrop shaped, most of the time with a low area in front and a pile as a tail. Walk well around them. (sorry for the quick shot through my sunglasses...) I also saw rainbows rising... Alot of little black stones, thought I saw some BWO's, and a ton of worms. Quote

fisher26 Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 Good post. It's so important not to accidentally trample redds. Quote
Hawgstoppah Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 I kinda wish they'd close the crow there at this time of year, becuase of this. Should be closed from the falls up IMHO... there actually spawning there... it's not like the highwood / bow confluence where it's "staging" fish, but rather actual spawners were allowed to fish for. Having said that, there can be some good fishing to be had when there off the redds and eating, but everyone should be very aware of the redds and not to step on them OR fish for fish on them. Thanks for the report Quote
sirocco Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 Thanks for the heads up Harps. So how many redds are there in the photo? Does each one belong to a particular female and then they're fertilized by multiple males, or do fish actually pair up? Quote
Tako Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 I count 3, maybe 4 or 5. Not real defined, but they're thinkin bout it. And all of the above sirocco. Quote
fisher26 Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 Just thought of this: Don't the eggs stay for a couple of months before hatching? If so then wouldn't trampling them be a thing you have to worry about for a couple months? For brown trout since they spawn in the fall, all late fall winter and spring couldn't fishermen actually be trampling redds? Quote
maxwell Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 u got it fisher thats why for the next while when u see the light patches... stay away.... Quote

Maybe someone with knowledge on the subject will chime in. http://content.cdlib.org/xtf/view?docId=kt...rand=calisphere Quote
