How do I know what size biots to pull off for the tail and wings?

 

Isn't it "half the size of the gap" Or the size of the gap?!

I use about 2/5 shank length for the tail and about 1/2 or a bit longer, shank length for the wings (white).

use the ones you pulled off...hahaha, it doesn't matter man. I like making my tails thicker then my wings...Tie a couple a different ways, see which ones you like more.

rule of thumb for most flies is tail should be the size of the hook gap, I make mine a little longer maybe 1.5 time the gap on #16-18 (makes it look "leggy") wings should be the length of the body, or a touch shorter..

Okay.. at some point during the tie I managed to break off one of the tail biots.. and I forgot to put the hackle fibers in! Man.. I get distracted easily!!

not bad at all. don't worry bout the hackle fibres...pain in the @ss and not worth it, still just a productive without them imo. nice tie(minus it missing one tail!)

that'll work for sure, I tie my own pattern called a soda prince, cause it soda looks like a prince, you only gotta fool the fish, don;t worry about the critics

Beauty. That's all ya need., I stopped tying hackle on mine long ago. Works just as good without it. I would work on cutting down your buildup around the bead next. But you will ALWAYS have buildup on the PN. Here's what I use as a PN

I gave up on hackle and folding back and adding fibers for legs on nymph.....................still catching fish......................might be catching more with them..........................but i don't know that now do I.
