BurningChrome Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 I don't tie on them myself, but this is worth a read if you do. http://flyfishalberta.com/jensenflyfishing/new-video-trouble-at-the-mustad-ranch/ Quote
DonAndersen Posted November 18, 2017 Posted November 18, 2017 Gee, I just ordered near $300 worth of hooks. Only been using them for 60 years. Work well. Catch fish upwards of 8 lbs. on them. You want a lousy hook - give a Tiemco 100 a shot. Don Quote
Dangus Posted November 18, 2017 Posted November 18, 2017 I generally tie on mustad as well. Hook selection at the shop really boils down to what ever brand has the gauge, size and shape I need. They’re all sharp...or sharp enough. I haven’t had the same experience as the jensens yet. But I’ve had an odd hook in a pack that clearly missed the heat treat. Could bend it with ease in any position you wanted and it would hold it. The news doesn’t get me too worked up. Quote
TroutPanther Posted November 18, 2017 Posted November 18, 2017 I've only ever had issues with the C49s hooks, in size 14 and smaller, but everything else has been fine for me. Most of the other mustard hooks I use are 2x strong and hold up just fine. It has been bad enough with the C49s that I have thrown out entire batches of nymphs in disgust after losing fish after fish on bent hooks without overly heavy pressure. I won't buy them again, as a few companies make a good curved pupa/shrimp hook. Quote
ericlin0122 Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 i tied most of chironomids in C49s hooks, never have any issue. if you like bent hook, give TIEMCO 200R a try. Quote
Spinn Posted November 23, 2017 Posted November 23, 2017 I had the same experience as TroutPanther. I started fly fishing/tying this year and bought mustads C49 as the price was good. I managed to hook into a nice sized trout that peeled my fly line right away and got me into the backing. Unfortunately after a couple minutes, the hook bent out. I probably won't use them in a size 16 or smaller anymore. Quote
DonAndersen Posted December 1, 2017 Posted December 1, 2017 Chose your hook style depending on fish weight. C49's I find are good for fish to 3 lbs. after that you need a heavier iron hook. i use C068 for chironomids.dpwn to #18 w/o a problem. R50's too #16 after that Partridge Capt. Hamilton >26's regards, .Don 1 Quote
