clancy Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 I have been enjoying some big foam Stone with a dropper fishing. As hopper time is approaching, I would appreciate some advise. Are their any techniques to get the big foam to float right side up? Are their particular patterns that work better than others? I have tried floatant on the whole fly, just the top, just the bottom, and none at all. Seems to work better when a heavier dropper is on. Giving the line a quick twitch works most of the time, but it does create some disturbance and likely spooks fish. Any tips would be appreciated. Quote
RedBeard Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 If you tie your own flies try tying them on a heavier nymph or streamer hook Quote
Vagabond Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 I was having the same issue with a skid bitch a few weeks ago which had a foam head extending over the eye,so I stabbed a hole in the head for the tippet to pass thru and fixed it. If the pattern doesn't have an extended head, maybe try a half hitch behing the eye in such a way that the tippet leads upward, kind of a variation on the rifflin' hitch used by salmon/steelheaders....worth a try? 1 Quote
fishinhogdaddy Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 i've seen guys put a small pc of lead wire close to the back of the hook on the shank to get the fly to sit "in the film". It should work to keep it upright if you place it correctly. FHD Quote
BigFoamy Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Ive found over the years that no matter what foam pattern I fish, it lands upside down now and then. Quote
flyfishfairwx Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Some of this has to do with line/leader twist caused by the shear size and weight of the hopper and also compounded by a dropper if you are using one, so tie your foam hopper on with a loop and a lot of the upside down thing will go away. 2 Quote
clancy Posted August 5, 2015 Author Posted August 5, 2015 Thanks for the tip, but I am not sure what you mean by tying on with a loop. Do you mean tying a loop around the head like Vagabond suggested? 1 Quote
BurningChrome Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 I think he means a loop like a non-slip mono loop or Rapala knot. I've always found that if your hopper lands upside down a quick line mend will usually put it right. Quote

Yes, the non-slip loop is what I use, also if the hopper does land USD a quick twitch can make it right itself, Quote
clancy Posted August 11, 2015 Author Posted August 11, 2015 Tried the non slip loop on Friday and it worked! Thanks for the advice. Quote
