plumeja Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 So I bought this kit online to Ty them hair caddis. I have never dealt with elk hair before but it seems like this is a terrible patch. There is to y bits of fuzz all through it and the color is a dark brown with only tiny white tips. Is this what elk hair is sappost to be like? Quote
Guest Grinr Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Not all patches will have alot of underfur, depends on what part of the elk/deer hide it was cut from? Clip off a small bunch (enough for one fly),hold it by the tips and use a stiff toothbrush, fine comb or similar to brush out the fuzz, then use a hair stacker to align the tips. Quote
Flytyer Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 You'll find this out that most stuff bought online will be disappointing when it comes to fur, hair and feather quality. It's best to be able to visually inspect the goods in your hand and most if not all the shops will help you pick out the better stuff. Quote
ÜberFly Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Jason, If you cut the amount of elk/deer hair you need, pinch it between your fingers and then flick it a few times (like you are flicking a mosquito off your skin) that will dislodge all the under fur. Then you can put it in your stacker... Quote
