Hi,

I am pretty new to fly fishing but with me getting into it my Dad has also started to take a liking to it. I currently have a Sage Flight 5wt and a TFO BVK II (I think it is a number 2) reel. What I am wondering is what would be a good second setup to have? My Dad wants to buy something that I don't already have but that he could get use of in the bow as well.

Please let me know your thoughts

Cheers

Connie

2/3wt if you plan on dry fly fishing the high mountain streams (cutthroats/brook trout)

7/8wt if you are going to fish the bow a lot (easier to cast larger flies, better in the wind) and/or stalking big bull trout/pike

Buy a good one to start with (Sage) or less expensive now and upgrade later (costs more in the end)

Personally, for the Bow, I have a 6wt rod that I use exclusively for nymphing. For dries an 8'6" 5wt. Streamers (which I rarely do) a 10'0" 7wt.

All have more than enough backbone for the fish on the Bow, and I know plenty of people who use anything from a 2wt to an 8wt on the River.

All in all, it comes down to what you are most comfortable with and what you like the feel of best.

Try a few out, lengths, actions, weights and buy what you like the feel of most.
