jriad Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 Hey Guys, If you see fish boling like mad but not apparent insects on the surface what kind of flies should you try and throw? (PS Very new to fly fishing) Quote
headscan Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 Could be emergers or nymphs just below the surface. Try searching google for "trout rise forms" for some informative articles. Quote
jriad Posted July 13, 2011 Author Posted July 13, 2011 Thanks i'll take a read. So how does one get a nymph or emerger or nymph to stay just under the surface. Sorry this site is just a lot faster than me struggling via google to find the right answers. Do you need a specific leader? Quote
Hawgstoppah Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 if it was early morning on the bow recently, and they are large slurping loud boils, they are taking stoneflies. Try a large foam stonefly imitation of large stimulator. If it was evening it's more likely they were hitting caddis emergers, grab emerging caddis patterns and fish on a swing through the area of active fish and you should connect. If not try a small minnow-like streamer fished through the area, usually get their attention! Quote
Gaffer Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 Thanks i'll take a read. So how does one get a nymph or emerger or nymph to stay just under the surface. Sorry this site is just a lot faster than me struggling via google to find the right answers. Do you need a specific leader? There are a couple of ways to fish emergers. I use an fly matching the adult of the emergers, or a larger highly bouyant fly that you can see. Tie the emerger to the bend of the top fly with a fine flouro section of line so it sinks below the top fly. Use the top fly like an indicator. When it goes under, hit it. You can also cast an indicator with your emerger flies below it. Andrew Quote
SilverDoctor Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 You can also grease you leader and not use and indicator so just the fly is in or below the film. Quote
