Weedy1 Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Anybody know what this fly pattern is? I’m sure I found it on the forum at one time but can’t seem to find it searching here or in any of my books.. It’s quite beat up, but seems to have some luck catching big fish. Help would be appreciated as this fly has been a killer up north here this year. Quote
lonefisher Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 I looks a lot like a backswimmer or boatman pattern that I have seen Brent Schlenkter tie.... (A million appologies if I spelt name that wrong and I know i did) But in all honesty I am not sure.... in the pics it almost appear to have antenae on the head but that may be your tippet...... thats my best guess but if those are antenae its not a backswimmer..... Weedy1 Posted September 13, 2007 Author Posted September 13, 2007 Nope that's the tippet, no antenae. Quote
ladystrange Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 not a clue, but looks easy enough to replicate Quote
LynnF Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Water boatman...by the position of the 4 legs. I watched how Mike turned a pheasant tail into one by doing that and had a STELLAR day on Beaver Lake some 6 years ago catching big fish after big fish by modifying the fly to look like that. If anyone here hasn't heard that story a million times by now, I'm happy to share Quote
ladystrange Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 oh what the hell. do share, i havent heard it Quote
hydropsyche Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 That picture isn't so clear. Send it to me and I'll tie you up a dozen or two. Quote
lonefisher Posted September 15, 2007 Posted September 15, 2007 At the tail end of the fly there is 2 brown things sticking out are they tied in like that of it is just part of the shellback coming off? They make very little sense to me...... Whatever it is it is a interesting looking pattern Quote
Weedy1 Posted September 15, 2007 Author Posted September 15, 2007 Lone, I think that's the shell back coming off but it seems too dark compared to the PT that is still in place. I had a well experienced fellow at Muir last night tell me he figures it may be a shrimp pattern although I'm not sure what the biot would represent. Here’s a better image: Quote
lonefisher Posted September 15, 2007 Posted September 15, 2007 HMMM well If anything to me it resembles a backswimmer of sorts...... but the ribbing at the back seems outta place as well as those brown strands...... it also looks to me as if it had a tail at one point...... it would be different then most shrimp patterns I know but that could be what it imitates..... maybe but then the bouble biots would be really outta place and the copper ribbing and those brown strands.......... tough to say could be like SJW said some kinda light baetis or callibaetis (sp) http://royalgorgeanglers.com/shop/images/S...Callibaetis.JPG me thinks maybe callibaetis althou I would still have to say the biots are kinda weird..... albannachxcuileag Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 Your first photograph and reply were right - a Waterboatman or Corixia - looks like it was tied with both goose biots and PT fibres to create the legs, nice hazy dubbing and shellback completes the fly Quote
Weedy1 Posted March 13, 2008 Author Posted March 13, 2008 I think I found the answer. Only took 6 months. "Doc's October Baetis" from here: http://flyfishcalgary.com/board/index.php?...ost&p=40726 Quote
