The GPS unit receives a signal from the satellites to figure out its position or time. There is no mapping information received from the satellite signal itself, only position and time information. All I know is that I have a garmin nuvi that gets me lost once in a while. punch in an address here in the city, take a left here, take a right there - then drive for 254 kilometers to your destination. I think that I'm getting off the topic, but I bought a nuvi 1490 in December & have updated it twice since.
