EdB Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I'm having trouble keping my split shot from sliding down. Is there a certain way to do this? I worry that if i pinch it to hard it will weaken the tippet. I tried that soft putty lead stuff but it doesn,t seem to want to stay on for me. Any suggestons? Ed Quote
Crogg Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Try wraping the tippet around the split shot and pinch... Quote
dryfly Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Clamp the split above a tippet knot... If you are only using a tapered leader (say a 4X) then add 2 feet of 4X tippet and add split above that knot. If you are not using some sort of tippet (i.e. only a leader), then you should be doing so as in: leader>>tippet>>tippet>>fly OR leader>>tippet>>fly. Many combos can be used. Quote
KnotLikely Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 You can also try using a small swivel at the end of your leader (size 14 I think). Tie your tippet to the other end of the swivel, and pinch the split shot on the leader side of the swivel...it'll never slide down, you're leader will last longer, and tying on more tippet is a breeze. walker1 Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I agree with Clive. I put the split above the blood knot that atttaches tippet. It will not slide, even on the long casts. On smaller rivers where I am flipping the nymphs or short casting, I do not find it necessary as the split does not slide. Try it! Quote
SilverDoctor Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I always pinch split shot with forceps. Makes for a solid hold. Also be sure to push the leader material right to the back of the split shot hinge. Some varieties are also softer than others and open easier. They can also be dislodged if banged into rocks or on a snap cast. Quote
EdB Posted September 6, 2007 Author Posted September 6, 2007 thanks. I wasn't using a leader because tippet was brand new. Tied on a leader today and the split shot never moved. Got of the river just b4 that storm hit. Quote
