seanbritt Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 Max, thanks for pulling this together! I found this month very challenging, as I tie 99% wet flies/nymphs/streamers and usually just buy dry flies. What I enjoyed about this month is that it forced me out of my comfort zone to try something new. Anyway, I went with something easy as this is only about my 20th since getting back into tying! Name: CDC Mayfly Dun (taken from the Orvis Fly-Tying Guide) Recipie: (Had to make due with what I had!) Hook Type: Mustad 94840 size 16 Color: Olive/Brown Tail: paint brush fibers (great substitute for microfibbets, you can also use hackle if you want a slightly lighter fly) Body: Wapsi superfine brown/olive dubbing Wing: Brown CDC mixed with olive mallard flank Thorax: Wapsi superfine olive dubbing 3 things I like about this fly: (1) it's easy to tie and worked for me in the past!, (2) the brown/olive mixing of material makes it easier to fool fish when trying to match the hatch and you don't know if you should go brown or olive and (3) the mallard mixed with CDC is a good way to bulk up the wing without using too much expensive material (CDC). I inserted two photos, sorry I couldn't get a better shot! Quote

Bezz Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 Well, I finally went out and bought some tying gear on Sunday so technically I have been tying for over 48 hours. I was looking for something to work on tonight when I found this thread. I'm very new at this so take it easy on me. I know that mayfly duns come in lots of different shapes and sizes but I chose to try and imitate a yellow drake with the materials I had on hand. I really like the extended body look for this type of fly and the almost invisible tail. Take it easy on the noob.... ( I apologize if this doesn't even qualify!) Recipe: Name: RBYD Dun Hook Type: Mustad dryfly hook, I chose a size 8 because thats what was here. Color:Yellow / Olive Tail: paint brush fibers (thanks for the tip!) Body: Yellow foam/olive antron dubbing Wing: Elk Hair Thorax: More olive dubbing Good Luck All! Quote

reevesr1 Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 The elk hair looks broken on the ends, like split endz, ya know. No way it will ever catch fish. Send it to me, along with any more ya got. I'll dispose of them properly. Quote
