where would you put a small swivel on a nymph rig?? am i right to say tie it on to end of leader then tie the first fly and tippet on to other end of swivel.. i would assume that you dont want it between flies??

Also woudl having a swivel reduce the amount of tangling with more than one nymph??

Colin,

For nymphing exclusively, I use a very small swivel (can't remember the size off hand 1/32 maybe?!) and use a 7' or 7.5' 1X or 2X leader and tie the swivel at that point (some people use straight mono)... From there, your 1st fly should be around the 9' mark (I use 6 lb maxima as my tippet for all 3 flies if I can or go down to 4 lb depending on the size of the terminal fly - as long as I can get the line through the eye). I use this set up for "normal" Bow River conditions. I then use my strike indicator to adjust the depth.

I ABSOLUTELY feel that using a swivel reduces tangling!!

Hope this helps...

P

I will use bigger swivels if I know I'm going to be fishing faster water. Eliminates the need for extra weight. I have a little box with several different sizes.

As to tangling, I think it helps reduce. But remember, it is another hinge in the system which does not help. But I agree with Pete. I think in the end it helps. It certainly helps your leader last longer.

I use a tippet of flurocarbon and on my tapered leader I use a size 14 or 18 black swivel. The size 18s are hard to find...

I use the same when fishing chironomids in lakes.

never an issue casting but here in BC we are only allowed one fly...no dropper allowed at all

ive ibn using swivels for years now they are awsome!! gives you the extra weight and if u need a spot too attache more split for heavy current i attach them just above the swivlel so i dont halfto worry about them sliding down too my nymphs.. uberfly has nailed it.. i like a 7ish foot leader then th tippet and nymphs below!
