iliketrout Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 Hey all, would anyone like to share their favourite streamer pattern for this time of year and winter for the bow. Quote
bhurt Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 Clouser, Leeches are usally what I toss. Gonna try intruders and decievers this winter, Quote
headscan Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 I like intruders, bow river buggers, and leech patterns. Quote
acurrie Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 I think I have been tying my intruders to large, I've been going with 30mm waddington shank and size 2 octopus trailing hooks, so most are like 3 inches long or so. Do you think that is to big for the bow?? especially with low, clear water.... Sorry to Hi-jack, I like using BR Buggers and white and black Wolly Buggers. Drew Quote

I find the waddingtons too bulky so instead I use a size 4 streamer hook and just snip it before the bend. Probably makes a 3 inch plus fly. Quote

In making these types of flies without the shanks what is the best way to attach the dropper hook? I was thinking to put the dropper hook on some heavy mono and then to lash it with tying thread to the shank of the cut off streamer hook, maybe use some super glue for good measure. Quote

You got it man, i like to use tyger wire and tie it down with flat waxed nylon thread. I also use a little extra wire so i can fold it over itself and and tie it down for extra strength. Check out headscans fly tying post for a pic! Quote

I tried that Tyger stuff and didn't like it because it was too thick and I couldn't change the hook after the fly was finished. I use 80lb Berkley FireLine, though lots of guys use Rio Slickshooter. As long as you use something that keeps the hook from dangling I think you're good. Miguel Morejohn used to have a great video showing how to tie an intruder including the stinger hook but he seems to have taken it off his site. nebc Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 For the Intruders a person might do well tying tube flies instead? I am about to go that route when the materials arrive...and if this weather persists... Quote

agbff Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Dont forget sculpin's... I like a small olive rabbit strip what a big flat spun deer hair head. Quote
bulltrout Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 i just slip an O-ring on and then the hook after everything's all tied off... as for streamers...whatever variables that seem to be working on that day dictates my pattern but one can't go wrong with and olive bunny bug or a tan woolly sculpin... I've been curious about this. In making these types of flies without the shanks what is the best way to attach the dropper hook? maxwell Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 i like the split ring idea aswell! converting all my stuff too tubes tho this winter, i like using bite wire or the berkley coated wire for my shanks! i figure! all streamer patterns are good bets! keep in mind with larger stremers u close the window on what size of fish u wil catch (bigones) but if u want more action smaller 1inch flies iwll work too and u will get more grabs from little pickles! headscan Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 i like the split ring idea aswell! I found that kept the hook too close and my rhea would often foul on it. Quote
nebc Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Speaking of tube flies, here are some of the sites I like to visit that deal with this... http://steelheadalleyflytying.blogspot.com/ http://www.canadiantubeflies.com/ http://troutbeads.com/ http://www.tubeflies.com/ http://www.tubeflytech.com/ http://www.eumertube.com/abcs.php http://www.eumertube.com/ABCsOfConeheads.php Note in this last link how the Eumer rivet type coneheads push more water giving a better movement and retaining body fullness too.
