  1. Nautilus, Danielsson, or Loop Evotec if you're looking for shiny with a kick ass sealed drag. If you want good value for the price, these are in my opinion "buy once, replace never" reels that will take a pretty good amount of abuse. I own four Nautilus reels (5, 8, 10, and 12T) that have seen quite a bit of abuse and no maintenance other than running them under the tap once a month or so. Last weekend I dropped the 10 on a paved parking lot from around eye level and there wasn't even a chip in it, let alone a dent. If you're considering spending the money on a Zane you can pay the same or a little more for one of these three reels. Nautilus are made in Florida and Danielssons in Sweden if that matters to you.

  2. My understanding from when things were going the other way around is that the retailers negotiate their prices/exchange rate with their suppliers once a year. That's the reason I was told that the gear prices didn't immediately come down. So if that's the case, I guess it all depends on when they last negotiated and when the next time will be. It may be that they only negotiate this with certain distributors and not others. It may also depend on if they pay their suppliers in US or CDN $. If they pay their bills in USD, then the retailer may choose to include some markup to compensate for the unfavourable exchange rate.

This information was given to me by a local shop owner (who I trust) so take it with as many grains of salt as you want.

  3. To prevent this break down of your polymer fly line you need to treat it with a wax based fly line dressing and store it in a cool dark place. If you want to be really anal you can put it in a zip lock bag and suck all of the air out to further prevent the reaction.

I would think that using a wax-based dressing on Sharkskin would be a bad idea. Wouldn't wax build up and eventually fill the textured part of the line? Without that you're losing the benefits of its unique design.

  4. Z Spey has had many big name endorsements

Heh, if they paid me enough money I'd endorse it too. I'm sure Henrik left Scierra for Zpey for a bigger cheque just like when Lefty went from Sage to TFO.

  5. Isn't the chenille version of the SJW the "original"?

Interesting list and some cool patterns there. Now what would be more interesting is a list of the top 25 flies that caught the most fish. I love seeing new ideas, but I've probably caught more fish on GRHEs, PTs, and Princes than every other nymph pattern combined. Have to admit that the CJ is definitely moving up the list as well though.

  6. Since I don't see the Zpeys on the Loop website any more, my guess is that the Loop-Zpey partnership is over and that's why they're so cheap. If you're really interested in that rod and want the first-hand opinion of someone who has cast one you should talk to Brian Niska (Whistler on the board).

  7. Good on ya Gord. I'm sure you'll ace it. So is that 4 months for the single hand and another 4 for the double hand or 4 months total for both? The length and intensity of the course just goes to show how significant being a certified instructor actually is.

  8. Trust me I don't spend all my FF $ at Troutfitters but for me it was in the NW and so was I. It was a great store to stop into on the way home and I was always treated awesome so for me that counts for a lot. I really think it sucks that the NW won't have a store as I live in Cochrane so the stores in the far south are a once in awhile treat for me same with Wholesale.

I'm in the same boat as you. I live in Citadel but work downtown so Troutfitters was the perfect place for me to stop on my way home from the office especially if I was going to fish early the next morning or just needed a spool of thread or something. Unfortunately their downtown location is too far from my office to walk at lunch and I don't think there's much in the way of parking around there, so it looks like I have to wait until I'm in the south. The convenience factor of the old location was huge for me. I do wish them the best of luck in their new location though.

  9. Just to offer the flip side of the coin from Al, try one of the Dec Hogan Echo rods as well (they carry them at Fish Tales). Al and I frequently fish together - him using his TFO and me with my Decho. Both are excellent rods for the price and the only difference for us is our preference in the way each rod casts. So your casting might be better suited to one of the two rods. Also make sure that you get the right line for whichever rod you choose. The best rod will frustrate you if you don't have it lined properly. Since you want to cast big streamers on the coast, make sure the rod you buy is suited to a Skagit line. I've used a Rio Skagit and Airflo Compact Skagit with a slight personal preference to the Airflo. I think a Loop Multi might also suit your needs, but Maxwell would be a better judge of that since I haven't cast one and don't know the exact price on them. Sage, CND, and Beulah (and I'm sure a few others I'm forgetting) also make some nice spey rods in your price range. They aren't suited to my casting style, but may be suited to yours.

  10. I have one of the Airflo Ridge running lines as well and find it's ok but not great. Mono shoots way further, but I find the Ridge doesn't coil at all. It's so thick though that you might as well buy a full line instead of a head + running line. Anyways, I'm already fully decided on the Monic because I want low diameter running line that doesn't stretch at all or coil in the cold. Not currently aware of any other running line that has all those properties.

  11. Totally agree with LoneFisher. I think a lot of us get locked in to certain flies and presentations because they worked last week, yesterday, or even earlier in the day. Dead drifting a SJW might work great for a while, but a few hours later it's ignored and they hit a swung caddis pupa and later still they're hitting a stripped streamer. The fish might be in the slower water early in the morning then move into the riffles as the day goes on. I've been just as guilty of locking in as anyone else, but once you start thinking about it and varying things you land more fish. I also don't think the fish in some of the high traffic areas are as spooky as most think. Today I was at Fish Creek and noticed a nice sized trout about 5 feet from me. Considering I was using double spey casts almost directly over him (noisy line ripping off the water) I'd say he was far from jittery. When I took two steps towards him he moved off but didn't bolt.

  12. sharkskin running line is being released to the public very soon, i'd hold off getting anything else...

Bruce showed me a spool of the Sharkskin running line (yellow) that Mike probably brought back from the show. I think I'm going to go with the Monic instead though. I'm going to be using the line with Skagit and Scandi heads, which means shooting and stripping. Don't think I'm too keen on having the Sharkskin rip/burn my fingers. I also have a feeling that the Sharkskin will be a lot pricier than Monic and other running lines based on the Sharkskin full line price. I'm sure it will be good and some people will love it, but it isn't for me.

I've heard good things about the Monic running line - Mike McCune raved about it on Speypages.

  13. Anyone know of a reputable source for Monic running lines? I haven't seen it locally so it looks like I'll have to order online. Really want to try this for the winter after my SA mono running line froze up and coiled yesterday. The monic running line has a GSP no-stretch core and coating that's supposed to reduce those problems while maintaining a thin diameter and high break strength.

  14. Don't expect too much from this guys. This list is ONLY for the companiesthat have your # because you've done business with them and for some charitable organizations. It's not gonna stop all the "you've won a free cruise" or "we're calling from credit card security". Those are most of my calls...and other than an unlisted # there's no way of stopping them. Those are the ones that need to be stopped the most. It's like phone spam.

Actually it's the other way around - https://www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/cofi-fico-eng

The thing is it won't stop the illegal calls like the credit card scams and other cons. If I don't recognize the number calling me or it's blocked, I just don't answer. If it's legitimate they'll leave a message. Probably only a matter of time before this database gets broken into and all the numbers are stolen and sold to the highest bidder.
