  1. I was in the emergency department at the Olds hospital a few years back when a 4 or 5 year old girl was brought in with a bite wound on her calf she received while swimming in 2 feet of water in Dickson dam. The doctor was puzzled. I think it was a pike. This kind of thing happens more than we hear about I'm sure.

  2. That was great. On a related note, I was confronted by a large dog on the weekend that didn't like the fact that I was trying to get back upstream to my car. It was from a nearby farm but was right down to the waters edge and quite upset. I had to cross to an island and walk up around to get back to my car; on the good side, I found a few more rising trout on my detour!

Bear spray isn't just for bears.

  3. Woke up this morning and went out to the car to go get some coffee. Found the wife's van glove compartment open and stuff strewn about. Crap. Luckily, she keeps nothing of value in the car, so it didn't seem as though anything had been taken. With a quick sigh of relief, I started to back up when I noticed my truck and remembered ALL MY FLY GEAR IS IN IT!!! Oh *hit. I run in the house to get the keys and open it up. Same thing, all compartments open, but the only thing of value is the fishing gear, which is all still there. Whew, dodged a bullet on that one. Until I realized both Sirius radios (one from each car) had been taken. Hope they enjoyed the night with them, as I will deactivate them this morning. Anyway, could have been worse. Stupid kids.

This is the third time I've been robbed in my life. Twice cars were broken into and once a garage. Worse thing I've ever lost was a set of golf clubs. I'll be speaking with my neighbors this morning to see how many others were broken in to. The cars were both locked, but there was no damage breaking in. Could have been much worse--I'd say that I'll never leave my rods in the car again, but the odds are I won't stick with it.

Hope the little dough heads get caught!

That sucks Rick! Too bad a sat radio couldn't be GPS tracked.

  4. Made it out to the bow last Sunday for 2 hours and had quite a unique experience. Fished a piece of water I wouldn’t normally fish, and caught my all time record trout! After almost 20 years of fly fishing, this one absolutely smashed my record!

The experience started at the parking lot. When I arrived the parking lot I was shocked to see so many vehicles. There were at least twice as many as I have ever seen before. I thought, I wonder how many miles I’m going to have to hike to get into a fish as I counted only around 5 pretty good runs within about 3 miles. Anywho, I headed up stream and as I suspected found 2-3 guys in each run with others fishing some pretty un-impressive sections in between the good runs.

I made my way to a run I wanted to try, which was quite far just to find 2 guys there, and 1 more above them in some riffles. I almost turned around and went back but though, hey screw it. I’m going to try and cross the river above these guys and fish the other side since no one is there. I scoped out a gravel bar and small island ¾ across that I thought would be do-able and headed in. I was a little nervous as I have never cross the Bow before and didn’t want to go for a swim. After about 5 or so minutes I made it to the small island and noticed there was a beauty little run on the other side between it and the other bank so I setup my rod and got ready to rock and roll.

I was impressed how deep this little run was and kept at it for about 20 minutes working my way from bottom to top. I was making my couple last casts when Boom, a good take and hook set. Now… this is where the fun/panic/hand-shaking began. This fish ran so fast down the river that I got some rope burn as I tried to feed the 10 feet of slack into the reel that were on my feet. This fish ran my into my backing a long ways before it stopped. It felt like I had hooked the bumper of a car! When it stopped I was sure it had me on a log or something as I could not move it even after a couple of minutes or pulling back and forth to near line breaking tension. I could feel some movement so I thought again, maybe he’s still on but on the other side of the obstruction so I started to head back into the water and downstream into some not-so nice water. When I got about 40 feet down, bam, the fish made another incredible run downstream taking like like crazy! Then, just like before, it stopped dead. I moved the rod back and forth and put a ton of pressure on the fish and thought, damn he’s got me on another log! Like before I could feel something but couldn’t move it. I worked my way downstream again another 40-50 feet and was sure this time I was going to break off. When I got there, I almost crapped my pants when the fish took off upstream towards me. I realized it wasn’t getting me into obstruction, this fish was a monster! For a moment I thought maybe it’s a pike, but what would a pike be doing in water as fast as this? No, it’s not a pike! My hands start to shake…

After the fish ran towards me it stopped again out in front of me about 60 feet. I held a ton of pressure on it and slowly it started to move towards me. After a while of this I saw it come to the surface about 20 feet out and immediately saw what I couldn’t believe. It was a massive Bull trout! For years I have been saying, one day I would really like to break the 30” mark for a trout. Today was that day!

Very slowly I dragged the bull closer and closer and realized he wasn’t fighting hardly at all, he was just so friggin heavy my 6 weight couldn’t move him in any faster. When I got him a rods length out I struggled like crazy to get him close enough to try and tail him. My rod was literally folding in half! I considered just breaking my line to not over wear out this guy but I wanted a chance to gauge his size as he was certainly the biggest I have caught. I gave it one more try and was able to grab the leader with my left hand and pull the fish alongside me. I was able to get a finger carefully under his gill plate so I had some leverage. I quickly took my rod and placed it above him from tail to head and he reached from the butt to just over the first snake. I immediately grabbed the fly that was in his top lip and gave it a downward twist… the fish turned to deeper water and disappeared. I measured my rod and its 32” from Butt to first snake so I estimated this fish between 33 and 35”!

No I know lots of you guys go for big bulls so this isn’t that big of a deal. For me this was an experience and fish of my lifetime!

    Things learned/remembered:

    New water/exploration is the best!

6 weight rods are too small for some fish on the bow

Try hard enough and good things will happen… eventually

The bow is a place where dreams can come true!

  5. Firstly I do not watch CNN or Fox, nor did I support the "war on terror" when it stared.

Consider the errors in your comment:

#1: "You really think they were ever fighting terrorism?" - why else would we be in Afghanistan, do some research. Its one of the poorest, least developed, resource scarce countries in the world. No oil, their only lucrative trade is poppies which no first world government is interested in. Why else would we be in there?

#2: "terrorists do live in New York and they wear $5,000 suits" - Get your head checked.

#3: "Stop taking the media's word for everything" - Never have I solely relied on the media for my opinions. I use logic, knowledge and facts to form an opinion. Unlike your radical sensationalism view of events.

#4: "the truth is out there" - troubling statement, especially when it comes to foreign affairs there rarely is "truth", rather just better opinions and arguments then others.

If you are going to be a sensationalist radical then at least support your claims, rather than just blatantly asserting them.

**mod edit for name calling** Wheres your support? I noticed you didn't mention Iraq. I suppose they have no resources huh? Your not worth my time to educate.

  6. Hmm your right, its a good idea to completely withdraw all support from a nation on the verge of collapse. After all when civil unrest and social needs become even more pressing its not like they'll turn to terrorism.

Who cares about those poor people on the other side of the world. And who cares about terrorism, as long as you don't live in New York its not a problem.

Withdraw support? That's an interesting choice of words. Someones been watching a little too much CNN or FOX news. You really think they are providing support? You really think they were ever fighting terrorism? I got news for you... terrorists do live in New York and they wear $5,000 suits. Stop taking the media's word for everything and start thinking for yourself. The truth is out there if you have the sand to go look for it.

  7. Obama gets awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In his acceptance speech he admitted he has accomplished nothing to get the award. Nominations closed with him being in office just 8 weeks.

    story here

In an unrelated story; rumor has it the NHL is thinking of awarding the Calgary Flames the stanley Cup as they have already won 4 in a row...

His country is at war, he has committed more troops, and he gets the peace prize? This is just another sign that shows we are completely :$*%&: .

  8. that is it dude! higher air temps means higher water temps.. higher metabolism.. oxygen level could also effect there habits but for the most part it goes hand in hand with air and water temps.. higher water temps lowerdisolved oxygen so fish move into faster water(also easier for em too feed with higher metabolism) same with colder water higher dissolved oxygen but they have lower metabolism.... baroetric pressure might affect feeding habits btu im not sure if it affects metabolism...

I would bet money that oxygen has a lot to do with it. On many smaller creeks I have fished that do not have many bubbling riffles, the fish do not jump/fight nearly as hard as other rivers that are very close that do.
