  1. This is what my wife and I have, and we have no complaints about it whatsoever: http://vistek.ca/store/DigitalSLRs/254757/...efs-1855mm.aspx

Excellent entry level DSLR that would last anyone for awhile I'm sure. Don't be fooled by the "entry-level" tag.. you can still do a heck of a lot of stuff with it... way more than the average person would ever do if normal use. Review here: http://www.steves-digicams.com/camera-revi...t3i-review.html

Edit: I have the T1i camera and haven't been limited by it. I also added a 50mm f/1.8 II lens for portraits (~$100).

  2. (I have no affiliation with Jensen Fly Fishing...)

Not sure if many people are aware, but Dave and Amelia have released a DVD about sight fishing.

The DVD is really well done, and I would recommend picking it up if you have any interest in sight fishing. They have some pretty incredible footage and it's highly informative. For $25, you can't really go wrong and adding a new technique to your fishing is never a bad thing!

I was lucky that they were over in NZ when I went there and they helped me be more successful. Dave has an incredible eye for spotting trout. I took what they taught me and have been able to apply it back home here in AB in every water I've fished. It's opened up a whole new perspective to fly fishing for me that is extremely rewarding.

Thought some of you may be interested!

  3. Any caddis?

Man i had a productive weekend at the bench. Filled a completely empty nymph box. Sets of 5 for each nymph, GRHE, PT's, Copper jons + Variations, Prince nymphs + Variations, Scuds, Leeches, worms, bwo killers, ice cream cones, Blood worms, rubber legged stones 20 inchers, golden stones, anything im missing ? Needless to say im completely out of gold tungsten beads and size 12-18 hooks.

I'll try and throw up a pic sometime soon.

  4. The L400 and L300 are completely different beasts. And the L300 is the beast. The L400 pulls extremely well on hills. When I drove the Coquihalla it maintained 110kmh, but that was peak with AJ & I and a bit of luggage. The L300 is the one that not only barely pulls 70kmh, but it does it with chugging diesel effect. :) The L400 handles very well. The passing power is actually, surprisingly quite good. For what we do, $10 - 12 K for a used 4x4 diesel van, it's a great vehicle. There's a Delica Canada forum for anyone wanting to check it out more - and lots of positive members that can put you in the right direction when buying or looking for parts if/when that pops up as all vehicles tend to. :)

As per driving RHD, the only issue I have is at an intersection where I am turning left. I simpy wait for good sight lines if there is a truck turning left in the opposite direction. One single lane hwys, sight lines are seldom an issue as the buffer to pass gives quite good sight lines. It's a minor adjustment.

A queen mattress fits in there too, and we camperized the NZ machine easily. But, it has to make sense for what you want it to do.

You forgot the best part about the grill looking like it's smiling Dave...

  5. In my opinion, there's a large difference between sharing spots on larger rivers or rivers where there is lots of fish (bow, oldman, crow, etc) to sharing spots on intimate waters where there may not be as many fish, and those fish will be put down for the rest of the day if someone has fished over them.

You can come back and fish a cutty spot later in the day and catch the same fish, but it's often not the case for some other streams...Stauffer is no secret, but have you ever fished it one day and not seen a fish to only find out that someone was only a few bends up?

  6. Ummmmm....not sure I follow you here?Generally speaking,I'm working upstream thru most stretches.Regardless, most of the midges I'm seeing are in extremely shallow, slackwater, right on the shoreline while I'm walking the banks, not wading or spooking fish? That said,I haven't seen a single fish rise for them, shallow, deep or anywhere in between?

FWIW,most of my fishing has been from mid-afternoon onward when there are already swarms of midges congregated tight to shore, usually in just inches of slackwater, where if there were indeed any trout bold enough to venture so shallow, surely I would easily see them.Am I just simply missing the emergence period earlier in the day when trout may be taking them??

Sounds like you are approaching the water correctly...from my experience most people will walk right into those shallow, slack water areas without observing it first...often times fish like to slide into those spots to feed. Fish can hold on extremely skinny water and often those fish are of the larger variety!

  7. Can someone explain why is it that I've seen tons of midges along the shorelines this week but not a single riser? Is all or most of the feeding(any?)taking place subsurface, and would midge nymph/pupa patterns be effective this time of year? Please forgive my ignorance as being relatively new to the area this winter flyfishing bizness is all new to me and my usual early spring/cold water/lethargic fish/east coast tactics aren't producing much in the way of results? The Bow has been kicking my ass this week with only one 18" Brown to show for 5 days/15hrs(?) of angling effort, mostly nymphing stonefly patterns, buggers,SJWs and a variety of small beadheads through the deepest, slowest water I can find.....grrrrrrrrr......

Did you fish upstream or down? Looking at midges that were on the surface over water you had just recently walked through and fished? If yes, good possibility any fish that may have rose to them took off...

  8. might have to try that strike indicator since it sounds pretty good. also if anyone wants can you please give me a good list of small nymphs i should use on the north raven? im going to be making an order at ickyflyworks.ca so i want to make sure i get the right ones that have a good chance of working.so far i think ill be getting the smallest side of bead head and normal hairs ear and a beadhead and normal pheasent tail and thats all i got so far since i know those two work. gonna keep looking but if anyone could give me some pointers itd be great!

some green caddis nymphs should be on that list.

dead drifted leeches sans indicator can also produce on stauffer at this time of year
