  1. Dropped into springbrook today to get my rod tip replaced - partly a big mistake, Ssomeone like me in a place like that.

The BVK was brought up in conversation and I was brought in a back room. The gentleman tells me to close my eyes, hands me a rod and asks me to tell him what weight it is. I'm thinking 5 wt - no it's a 9 weight with the new BVK reel attached.

This is a really light combo, i'm going back one day to demo it out in the back yard. Didn't have time today due to work.

Yes, I have the BVK rod and it is really light. The matching reel is pretty sweet too.

  2. I have the Fuji XP20. I have to say it is even better than the XP10 as they have improved the buttons so they are not the rubberized ones that were tough to press.

With the Olympus, be cautious of the little door that covers the lens as they tend to get gummed up and may not open properly in time. I have not used the D10, but in looking at it I found it to be a little bulky. I like to keep my point & shoot in my shirt pocket so I like a slimmer design.

With the Sony you may want to try out the touch screen to see how you like it. It seem many people either love them or hate them.

  3. I have one too and I like it, although it did crap out in the middle of my trip. I am not sure if it was the battery because it was low, but it was acting weird. If you do end up getting one, buy the optional LCD back. I find it makes using the camera WAY easier.

I am in the process of making a flat polarized lens. The flat lens makes the underwater shots a million times better and the polarizer will help reduce glare.

Another alternative to the GoPro is the CountourHD which a lot of people like. I saw them in the Future Shop flyer this week.

  4. I emailed Premier Fly Fishing and those Oar Blades are $100 each compared to Hydes Magnum Oar blades which are $75. I would like to go with the Premiers but I have other things I need to order from Hyde so I don't know if I can justify the shipping costs on two separate orders.

That makes sense. If you still want to check mine out let me know.

  5. I'd call Hyde to make sure you are using a compatible product, but if I were to bet dollars to donuts it is epoxy resin, not to be confused with polyester resin. Something like SilverTip by system 3 if easily available and easy to work with.

There are a number of things you can flow coat the bottom with. You can put a new coat of epoxy resin on the bottom. Some guys add graphite to the mix and coat the bottom with that.

You can also have sheets of UHMW added to the bottom called a shoe. Hyde or a boat shop would have to do that for you if you are not familiar with boat repair.

  6. Check these diamond blades out. I haven't tried them yet...but sure plan too.

    They make alot of sense....

Those are the oars that I have.

I've not had a chance to row them as my boat is still in pieces and I have not been out with anyone on the Bow yet this year,

They shipped by UPS from Hyde and they were $35, so dont worry too much about shipping.

Here is the kicker, Hyde was blowing them out and the were only $100. I was not looking to buy oars but had to at that price. I am just kicking myself I did not buy both sets they had. I think the regular price is about $500.

Fish Tales has a couple sets of oars. I think they have some Hyde ones and Adipose ones which are wood.

A lot of the wooden boat guys like their oars, plus they're in Canada http://barkleysoundoar.com/Product.htm#products

  7. I am glad to see that they will be giving you a new reel, too bad it had to come to this though. I usually have a hard time with posts like this as they are usually one sided.

Personally, I own a TSX reel and I think it is good value for the money. I also have their wind warrior 10' 5wt which I really like. I had the same problem with my TSX and they sent me a new one no problem.

I am just wondering if you happened to take it up with WSS? I don't know if it would have helped, but talking to them at some point may have gotten better results. I know that the rep said that they got no reply from WSS when he talked to them but they are the ones that sold you the reel. In my opinion dropped they ball too. I don't think Amundsen should have been on the hook to give you all your money back when they didn't receive the full retail price of the reel.

  8. I hear that the Amundson TXS G2 3/4 is epic and should be used on the new BVK by TFO.

Speaking of the TFO, has anyone tried the new BVK? What's TFO's warranty like? Is it as good as Sage/Orvis/GLoomis?

TFO has a lifetime warranty and IMHO it is better than the others since you can exchange it over the counter in Calgary and be fishing the same day. As far as I know, the others have to be mailed.

  9. There is a place at the corner of 114ave and 84st SE that stores boats, RV's etc. There are usually lots of rural places that will store stuff just outside the city. You could also look into an secured storage anywhere in the City. The nice thing with that is you would also have room for winter tires etc. that you may not in the garage in the summer.

I'm sure that a quick on Kijiji for RV storage or something like that would yield something.

  10. If you want to get rid of them all, you need to get rid of the breeders; Queen. So as mentioned in some of the previous posts, buy a product that gets taken back to the nest and has a residual effect, not just a contact insecticide.

When I worked for the Pesticide Chemicals Branch of Alberta Environment, the one which was effective and common is chlorpyrofos. Many brands have it as the active ingrediant, just look on the container. Worked great at my place for those pesky little red ants. They were all gone after a couple of weeks.

I dont know if you can still buy chlorpyrophos based formulations for the home. Being an organophosphate they may have been banned, not really the kind of stuff one wants around the home.

As for the ants, most of the commercially available formulations are based on boric acid or borax mixed with a sugar of some sort. If you mix borax 1:1 with icing sugar the ants will carry the borax into the nest and kill them. You can sprinkle it around and put some in an area where the ants can get at it.

    Or get an anteater.

  11. Any commercially availabe formula of 2-4D, Dicamba, Mecaprop (commonly called Killex) will work if you have a large area. Only spray the dandelion plant and that will ensure you are not over applying. Keeping a longer lawn will prevent dandelion seeds from germinating as they are not going to get enough light.

Fertilizing and strengthening the lawn will help crowd out dandelions. Dont use weed and feed. They are not effective as a combination and you will be applying unnessecary herbicides.

There are also new products on the market that are based on Iron Chelate that are good at top kill but will not kill the root. Repeated top kill will eventually kill the plants. These are marketed under the trade name Weed Be Gone, or Fiesta. Iron chelate is an alternative to traditional herbicides and is relatively benign. The up side with using iron is that you lawn will take on a nice dark green colour.

Once you get your yard free of dandelions you can apply turf maze (corn gluten meal) which will prevent weed seeds from germinating and will also act as a mild fertilizer.
