  1. I have just started running the SA MT Nymph line, and I gotta say I really like it. I also like the Sharkskin lines, but they are a love it or hate it thing. SA lines are somewhat hard to come by in Calgary since there have been problems getting an consistent rep. I never did find one so I ended up getting a free one when I ordered my latest Hardy Reel.

I've not used the Rio line, but there are lots of people that swear by them and use them.

I have always been a fan of the Cortland 444 and they are all I run on my fiberglass rods. Probably one of the best all time lines out there. I remember having that line as a kid on my first rod 20+ years ago.

Glad you like the Rio line.

  2. no worries, been doing tests.got it figured out.

No kidding. You spend more time breaking bits than building boats it seems.

Did the plascore ever show up? I am interested to see what I might be able to do with the bottom of my boat to lighten it it.

Just encase that model in resin and you're good to go.

  3. I would agree that the Class 3 side is the route I would take. the Class 2 side is too tight and I could see getting caught up in the sides easier.

I figure on the class 3 side you just need enough momentum to get through, keep rowing hard through it so not get your tail end sucked under. The nice thing is that there are no down stream obstacles to worry about so you can just power through it.

As soon as my latest boat is done I have no qualms about running it in my wooden McKenzie High side.

Here is a video of them testing it with some kayaks & canoes.

  4. What's the rules on the salvaging unmanned inflatable's?

You can return them to Wal-mart for store credit.

There are plenty of guys who can and do run class 2-4 rapids in drift boats. Take a look at Youtube for videos of guys running Big Kahuna, Lunch Counter on the Snake, or Blossom Bar on the Rougue to name a few.

  5. Bought a pair from Country Pleasures 3 weeks ago and love them. Haven't used my bib waters since and really a great wader for the price.

I also bought a pair of suspenders to go with them as mine tend to fall down and they are great. Not a flaw in the pants but a flaw in my body.

  6. I love my pants waders. There has never been a time for me that I wished I had full waders. I figure if I needed full waders then I probably dont need to be in that water.

If you fish from the boat alot they are great as they are more comfortable to sit in and you dont get as hot in the summer.

  7. The guy in the red zodiac is a pain in the ass. He has low holed us several times and we have had to pull him out at Mac already this year. If you dont know he runs a spin fishing blog named after a certain river we all like to fish.

I have also heard about the guy in the Hummer and his antics chewing up the river bed at Mac.

With that said, there are particular members here who have a reputation of being less than courteous with their jets.

  8. Jets dont piss me off, people piss me off. There are certain jet drivers that have a reputation for thinking they own the river and there have been words with them.

Having been out with a couple of experienced & courteous jet owners, like anything, it comes down to the driver. I am sure there are some jet drivers that would think pontoons should be banned. I don't know that I would knowingly put myself in such a small craft in a river where I know there are power boats and limited sight lines at times.

There have been times that I have been rowing and came across a pontoon anchored up in a bad place and had to hit the oars pretty hard to get out of the guys way.

It's just a matter of looking out for each other.

  9. yes i picked up some also thanks for the heads up gaffer.

scaled down some weight, each bottle is 250lbs and did a test float.

Looks like just enough rocker on the transom, the bow end floor is just touching the water.i measured the draft in the middle was 1 1/8" so to scale about 6.75"

Onto the sides,i had my plywood supplier cut a puzzle joint on each end of the ply with the cnc, this saved a ton of time cutting a scarph and trying to line them up.I whetted them out and then coated in some goo and they just dropped together.

I LOVE the look of that puzzle joint there. I plan on covering up my scaph with some type of stripe, but I would totally rock that joint.

  10. You can also try one of the camping stores or MEC. That carry lots of different cord & rope. Paracord can be bought a Crown Surplus in Inglewood for a decent price.

Gel spun backing may also work. It is pretty damn strong.

  11. I would never want to teach my partner to fly fish. There are better people who can help and divorce is expensive.

If your both wanting a little Bow River tune up talk to Max or one of the other sponsors here about doing a guided walk & wade. http://flyfishcalgary.com/board/index.php?showtopic=17195

Both of you will learn more in that time than you would learn on your own. It certainly reduces the learning curve and makes it more enjoyable.

  12. The rocker as it sits now is 6.75" in the stern and about 3.75 at the bow.i think i'm gonna skinny up the floor at the stern to increase to about 8.i think i'll shave a little off of the tops of the sides at the bow and stern to flatten it out a bit.any idea how much rocker you'll end with on yours?

I measured last night and I am at about 4 inches in the back. I never had any plans from lake use so I dont know how that works.

I'm not totally sure as it keeps changing. My build is pretty free form, but I think I will be pretty close to where you are at, maybe a little less in the stern.

I'll measure it up and let you know.

  14. Ok I just got a reel and a spare spool set up at Wholesale. I told them I was a lefty but somehow we still managed to set it up (the Line and Backing) for a right hand retrieve. What would be the easiest way to fix this? Un-spool the whole rig and set it up in reverse?

I was disappointed when I got to the river and found this, but landing my first brown on the lower bow at fish creek made up for it...

Suggestion on how to fixed welcomed.

I feel your pain. I am right hand retrieve too. Your other option is to start reeling with your right hand.

  16. In the end, no matter what I see from some of the so called "reports" here, a small percentage of fly fisherman catch the largest percentage of the fish, why? because they take the time to get to know the water. As said a few guides and fishermen here give wonderful accurate reports on conditions. But, Just because a spot is pointed out the likelihood of a novice being highly successful is low. Certainly there are exceptional days but I often see reports here that wildly contradict what is actually happening on the water as far as insect life, water conditions and size of catch. people like to boast and stretch it a bit.

Fly fishing is getting to know the water, insect life, cycles and seasonal conditions and using that information gathered to present a representation of what the food source is at the given time. In my mind it isn't using a bobber and wire worm, if that is your boast to being a fly fisherman, I believe you're missing the mark. Just my 2 cents.

    Lornce,

I could have not said it any better. End of discussion.
