  1. As a guy who is in the middle of building his second boat I would not walk, but run from this project. Here's a couple of problems is see based on the pictures.

    - That's not marine plywood, which means the glue that holds the plys together may fail if it gets wet. Even if you encapsulate the boat with fiberglass, which you have to do, water will get in there.

    - Those large joints on the side don't appear to be proper scarph joints, and the way that they are bent around the ribs looks like a failure point to me. There should be no sharp angles if they are done correctly.

    - The ribs and rear transom appear to be made of pine. Pine wont last in a drift boat. Rot city.

    - Sides look to be 1/2" plywood. That is going to be one heavy boat by the time you add glass and epoxy, not to mention seats and the interior.

$800 might be an okay price for the trailer, but there is only $100 worth of wood there. If your serious about building a boat, start with the proper materials unless you want a disposable boat.

    Just my $0.02

  2. I bought this phone and can say it is my favorite phone I've owned. I've owned them all from iPhone, galaxy etc and the Sony wins hands down.

I liked the Xperia phone I bought the 10.1" tablet too. Although it seems over priced I'm very happy with it too.

If you do get this phone get the magnetic charger http://www.amazon.ca/Patec%C2%AE-Replacement-Magnet-Charging-Xperia/dp/B00IRZ3T6M/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1398215922&sr=8-12&keywords=xperia+z1+magnetic+charger

It saves you from having to open the door to charge it

Although other phones have NFC, it is pretty cool.

  4. I'm wondering if anyone is going to be in Edmonton in the next little while and would be able to bring back some marine plywood for me. The suppliers in Calgary are not able to get their poop in a group, and cant provide what I need.

It would consist of 2 sheets, of quarter inch ply, ripped to 2'x8' panels. They will be bought & paid for, but would need to be picked up at Boatcraft (6316 - 106 Street, Edmonton). I can pick them up from you once you get back to Calgary

Of course compensation of some type will be offered, whether it be beer, booze or cash.

If anyone can help me out, please shoot me a PM.

    Cheers,

  5. In my biologist opinion the Sapro "event" of recent has several causes, some of which have been mentioned, but like so make things it is probably a culmination of many factors.

To me the biggest factor would have to be the low water levels which results in the following:

    • Higher water temps result in lower dissolved oxygen content in the water. This results in both greater stress in fish, reducing their natural ability to ward off the infection. Heat and low oxygen levels also favour fungal diseases like Sapro
    • Low water forces the fishes together into areas, increasing transmission among fish.
    • As Browns went into the spawn, they get rammy and territorial and can spread the fungus through fighting or mating. Mating also takes a toll on fish, lowering their immune system through competition for reddds and not eating while on redds, making it easier for the fungus to infect the fish.

I have no doubt that greater handling of fish, poor fish handling techniques and many other things didnt help.

I dont think this one event could decimate the Bow of Browns, but should serve as a reminder to us all to be stewards of what keeps us coming there, the fish.

  6. My wife is wanting one of these, and apparently there is a SUP club in Calgary and they do use the river sometimes.

Personally, I don't think it would be easy to fish from in the river, but they would work for getting from spot to spot, especially in the City where the river is flatter and has less rapids. Imagine catching a fish, trying to paddle, stay upright, avoid upcoming obstacles, and land the fish. I find this to be tricky enough with 2 guys in a drift boat.

On a side note I have fished the Flaming Gorge on the Green River where they shot this video, and I would like to see him going through some of the larger rapids they have.

  7. So my two year old (80 days) Sawyer PoleCat oars are starting to split from the handle down, so I'm looking for some new sticks. I've had Carlise EX HDs and now sawyers. so Im thinking of Cataract SGGs http://www.cataractoars.com/sgg.html with some Premier diamond blades http://www.premieroars.com/sites/premieroa...ct/IMG_4146.JPG as the next set.

Anyone use diamond blades and SSGs?

What do you use, and why?

    Jay

I have the Premier oars in all wood shafts. I do like them but have only rowed those and cataracts/hyde before. The diamond blades are nice especially in skinny water. I would also think about a shoal cut oar for the bow, they might be a good option.

I like the flex of a wood shaft.

Let me know if you want to take the Premiers out for a spin sometime.

  8. You can buy a lot of ice for that extra $200 the cooler costs. About 75-100 bags/blocks of ice.

And those grizzlies in the video weren't really hungry. They don't usually give up in 1 minute. More like 3 days.

Ice recently went up to $3 a bag or more in Calgary, so that is only 65 bags of ice for the additional $200. I dont know about anyone else but I easliy go through 100+ bags of ice in a summer.

A Yeti keeps ice way better than any other cooler I've seen, so if it saves me 30 bags of ice, it pays for itself in a couple of seasons.

    Just a thought.

  9. So Monger has kindly donated a set of childrens waders to my Flyfishing Club.

If anyone is coming to Edmonton over the next few weeks, we'd appreciate the help!

    Cheers,

    Smitty

P.S. And, if possible, I do have a personal request to make in terms of fly-tying materials, if anyone is inclined to pick some stuff up for me, seeing how Calgary fly shops have 10x the selection than Edmonton. Specifically, I am looking for purple, black, and blue polar chenille. Also, tippet rings would be cool. Do any of the fly-shops carry tippet rings.

Fishtales ships if you are in need. I bought some tippet rings there last week. They are the only place in town I found tippet rings.

  10. Fine then, drift boat or otherwise,my question is why not mount your anchor pulley to the bow, keep yourself outta the inherent trouble that comes from doing things bass-ackwards anchoring stern-to the current and be done with it instead of trying to re-invent the wheel?I too made a living on the water for 20+ yrs and run everything from square stern river canoes to skiffs and dories to 65' scallopers and every size lobster boat in between, and NEVER in my life have I seen ANYBODY(with the exception of Bow R. "experts")foolish enough to anchor stern to the current, tide,or wind?Yes by,I might be just another dumb Maritimer me,but me tinks me knows a ting er two bout boats me son.Hell, most you lads doneven knows how to row proper FFS,ye sits facin' the wrong way and rows backwards den drops anchor stern to......Lard Jeezis is no wander mar a yas flatlanders doesnt gets swamped and drowneded??

Remind me to stay the hell out of your boat.

Doing a 180 every time you anchor up. BRILLIANT, especially in narrow or fast water just what you want to do is put your sides to the current. Not only are you going to swamp your boat, your going to dump your passengers if they are standing up. This is a disaster waiting to happen.

Probably not an issue for you because after people read this you'll be fishing alone.

If you were able to read, Tungsten mentioned you will sway of you have too much rope out. Dont assume to know more than a guy who has actually done it.

You go boy, fill yer boots.

  11. R u serious??

Ummmmm....cut off 3" and tie a nail knot.

My Cortland had that problem too. No biggy. Put some UV knot sense on there to stop water wicking into the core & you're off to the races.

Depending on where you bought it they might be able to help you out.
