Hey Troutlover,
Good on ya for wanting to get out! At 16 you should be able to get started with this kind of stuff but just taking off randomly into the bush might not be the way to start off.
i) You should consider starting with a short couple-nighter at somewhere like Elbow Lake. You could hike in on a friday night and do a couple day hikes from there and hike out on Sunday night. You could combine this with regular check-ins with the SPOT device.
i) You should have a SPOT Device if you're considering this. link -> http://www.findmespot.ca/en/index.php?cid=102
Anyone in the backcountry or fishing alone should consider carrying one. I had a dream last night that something bad happened to me while skiing and I was glad I had one in my dream!
Anyways, just a couple thoughts. Good luck!

Awesome frog, Toad!

And 420, the idea is not a crossing over the river but just a way to get across the train tracks safely (as people have been doing for decades). A crossing arm or overpass could be installed instead of shutting off the entire area.
Losing access to the reservoir is what I am most concerned with.

Ham and bobjones,
You'll notice you're posting in the NFR section of the forum.
-
Yeah. This sucks. I definitely think a pedestrian crossing of some kind is in order!

I thought this thread was going to be about canning fish!
Sorry, couldn't resist...

Holy smokes! I'm sure the photos don't do justice to the colours of those fish. Beautiful!

I can't get the link to work. Is that the guy who was bowhunting and carrying the deer decoy?
This is all it says about the incident.
""Cochrane RCMP also continue the investigation into what police have termed a 'hunting accident' in the Waiparous area Friday shortly after noon, RCMP media liaison Const. Kerry Doran said in a news release.
According to Cochrane RCMP Const. Gary Fedrau, the victim, a 42-year-old man from Calgary who had been bow hunting west of Forestry Trunk Road 940, approximately 23 kilometres north of Highway 1A, was shot once in the abdomen by a 55-year-old man from Airdrie.
After being treated at the scene by Cochrane emergency medical services personnel, Fedrau said, the victim was flown by STARS to Foothills Hospital, where he underwent surgery and remained in stable condition.
As of Tuesday, police were still looking into the incident.
"I know the investigation isn't finished," Cochrane RCMP Cpl. Roger Waidson said. "The victim still needs to be interviewed."""

How many hunting accidents do you think there are every year in Alberta? When was the last time someone was shot after being mistaken for wildlife?
A couple years ago a guy was shot in the Waiparous area.
Not a great reference but mention of the incident appears here:

i do a TON of river caoeing and we can do 30-40k easy in a day. but you can also slow it down to what ever you want.
if its just one person you can stand up very easly and casting is not much of a problem.....2 people it is MAYHAM, one person will lean on way and the other person will try to compensate and it will all get wet from there.
^ I agree. I would have the guy in the front fishing while the guy in the back steers/controls the canoe. Or just pull over at sweet spots. If you are running out of time you should be able to dig in and cruise.

Those pike hits must have been pretty exciting! Looks like a cool spot. Nice work!

""I see a fish finder purchase somewhere in my future...""
Such a good decision. Even a cheapy is a great tool at least to tell you depth and show structure and temp!
-
Fished a lake last weekend and it was damn slow! Temp was just over 50F so I'm with Mike on cold water theory.
A bit confused though as fish were rising pretty good.
-
Ummm I think you missed the best one...... how about a Winston Boron IIT. Have you seen their videos on the small creeks.
If you're thinking of something higher end with a more traditional action. I would second something from Winston.
Good luck with the search!

The Art & Lutheries are really nice. Canadian made with a lot of options in your price range.

Oh, in that case it's a red wire worm. A big one.

Hey flyfishy,
Good topic but it would probably attract more attention in the "General fishing discussion" section.

Hi Guys,
I recently purchased a little 12 foot aluminum and old Johnson 9.5 hp outboard ('64-73, I believe.) The motor appears to be in decent clean shape but the previous owner informed me that it has not been run in about 5 years. I am leery of dropping it into a lake and running it without doing some kind of carb cleanup or other maintenance. I have read I should replace the water impeller right away and run some other tests. Unfortunately, I have ZERO experience with this stuff but am eager to learn and excited to have a new project.
Of course, I really do want to get it on the water before it freezes! If anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated. Does anyone know a good source for outboard parts (water impeller/pump kits, carb kits) and/or service in Calgary? or even online d-i-y stuff?
Thanks all,
Current...

Just got off the phone with them and can confirm that they can rent trucks specifically for towing. Pretty close to what you said Current..
$79/day including 100 free km's. 18 cents/additional km. One time towing fee is $39. And then $25.95/day for insurance. $1000 deductible if there's an accident.
That's probably fair pricing, but it quite a bit more than I had anticipated. Was wanting to go out for a couple long weekend camping trips this summer. I could probably buy an old beater truck for the same price as renting a couple times. Decisions, decisions..
Yeah. The $100 was including ins. Maybe you can rent an Explorer with hitch in the bumper from Enterprise or something as Pipestone said. Might be a bit cheaper.
