  1. wow. to think flies may double in price just because some idiot fasion guru stuck a feather in some scrawny models hairdo. its scary how contagious dumb really is...
  2. why not just turn a rock over and get a sample? very effective and no harm to the trout...
  3. this is something i hear a lot, guys will use different weight for different flies, different water, even different weather. i can buy into this, landing a 16" trout in a small stream requires little backing, that same trout in the middle of a big, fast river is a different fight altogether, but what about the reel(s) - just one with several spools or different reels altogether?
  4. wow! thanks eveyone, seems like a 6 wgt would be the way to go, of course "what fun would having just one rod be?" ;-) i was leaning towards a longer, stiffer six, then i would still have my 5 wgt to cast drys, then hopefully down the road i could look at a 3 or 4 for the small streams out in the rockies, but getting ahead of myself... for now, a six it is, will start hunting immediatley. thanks again guys!
  5. talking rods here folks, currently using a 5 weight set up, looking at something a little beefier, indicator nymphing and streamers are my bread and butter, was thinking a 6 wgt or 7 wgt with a fighting butt - the big question - is a 7 weight rod too heavy for the bow river? would a 6 weight suffice? thanks guys...
  6. the water below the deerfoot gets dicey, but spring is right around the corner, im trying to be optimistic through the cold...
  7. great video! love the part where franks talking about the bear having a bad day of fishing, but its all good, the music, everything - and the 30" rainbows chasing down mice imitations, awsome...
  8. well said SilverDoctor! me, im new to the sport, even more new at tying, my goal is to be able to open my fly box and look at my own hand tied flies when deciding how best to fool a trout, i mean - how cool would that be? money? pah! fun...
  9. that is the sexiest nymph i have ever saw...
  10. the guides start icing up too often right around -5, knocking off ice too often just makes it a miserable experience...
  11. thanks for the link! great glimpse into the upcoming seaon, spring is right around the corner...
  12. i bought the 200$ ones with the reinforced legs n' ass, hand warmer and six pockets - a dozen day trips later and they are a 100% - will just have to see how they hold up in the new season...
  13. that story's a heartbreaker, dont get down though, keep trying, the Bow is a tough river - but rewarding too, a couple tips on nymphing, 1) always, always use fluorocarbon, it really does make a difference, 2) try placing your smaller nymph dropper below your worm, seems to work a little better, 3) now, i have watched a guy easily manipulate 20' of line on the water, through varying currents and eddies - but i cant, i seem to catch more trout with less line out, its just easier to control, to get that dead drift and finally 4) if you havent read it already, "Reading The Water" by Dave Hughes - it will change the way you look at a river... hope this might help, i was lucky and had a good friend introduce me to fly fishing, made for a great first year, he was in the same boat you were and spent a year angling before landing his first trout, so dont get down, make sure you do the dishes everyday after supper for the wife and keep trying!
  14. the Bow River, too many days of the year we take this incredible river for granted, happy thanksgiving!
  15. they were jerks, dumb jerks at that, why would you fish a dog park? let the mutts have their fun, its only a small piece of a big river...
  16. thanks Mr.B, gonna hit the store after work on monday.
  17. after a tumble in a creek about 2k from the truck, i realized that bandaids and polysporon may not cut it as a "survival kit" if something serious happened, so... i had a good idea of what a kit should contain and did a little research to confirm, but now i am not sure where to purchase the things i need, i was thinking Wholesale Sports here in Calgary, but was wondering if you guys had any better ideas??? thanks guys!
  18. fishcreekpark is perfect, easy access, a pedestrian bridge that lets you hit both banks and there's trout in that water! failing that, anything south of 22x is going to produce, good luck man...
  19. gonna take Buddy down to the Bow later today, take him for a bit of a run first, then rig up and just do some casting, see how he react s to the whole thing, hopefully its a smooth operation, but we'll just have to see!
  20. i cant agree with you here, you're comparing apples to oranges, try and think of it this way - if you were walking along the river and in passing a juicy hole that some other wader was already working, would you think it was okay to just toss a dry into his hole while you passed it/him by? i think not, i think it would get ugly actually, apology or not. the great thing about drifting a large river like the Bow is that not only do get access to both banks, but you can nail those juicy seams and islands that are just out of reach from us guys wading, we have 50' of one bank, you have several miles of whatever part of the river you want to hit... imho, it sounds like you want your cake and hope to eat it too, so speaking of karma - dont be getting all greedy now... ;-)
  21. thanks for sharing the stories! sounds like i should take Buddy out to a local spot and just see how he behaves, hes pretty good about staying close, birds are his only weakness, but as soon as he loses sight of me, he always comes racing back to find me - not sure about moose! dumb question - im guessing that a drink from the Bow is a bad idea, but creeks up in the eastern slopes should be okay for him to drink, shouldnt they? thanks again guys!
  22. my dog, Buddy, is a one year old "pointer mix" - a high energy hound, i would like to bring him along fishing with me, he is well trained and enjoys being outside, also, the wife would really appreciate me taking him along, in particular on my day trips to the back country... but how good an idea is this? my concerns are him getting bored sitting around watching me fish, or him getting bored and jumping through a hole and spooking all the fish. i would just like to get some thoughts and opinions on bringing your dog along fishing, especially from you guys who own dogs and may have some first hand knowledge, thanks guys...
  23. hope he recovers quickly, never good seeing a good dog down...
  24. great story Boris, getting beat by your kids is the one time you dont feel bad about it!
  25. half dozen of each, just a couple if its an experimental pattern, i try and keep it simple - light and dark drys, variations of the PT nymph and just a few other seasonal patterns, Sjw and some wooly b's and not too much else, but keeping it simple is tough - all kinds of cool flys that might catch more fish, see? ;-)
