  1. Um, I don't think they cover stuff that you throw out in the garbage. I couldn't live with myself to try and BS my way through it, it's not who I am.

Dave, yeah I might be interested in that spool but I now have no islanders left (reels) as I lost my other one ono the bank of the Bow last year. Still hoping to see that one someday but it's been over a year now :(

Never a good feeling losing fly gear or having it stolen.

I got cleaned out one fine day back mid nineties on the Crow by some shitty person.

Anyhow not trying to prey on your misfortune but the islander is a reel plus a spool. I'll help you out as best I can on that one.

  2. So as I am thinking about doing some fishing this weekend I go looking for one of my fishing bags. inside this bag was a couple reels (including my spare islander IR2, and a couple of reels for 6wt's) and about 1000 flies, lines leaders tippet splits etc. plus this bag had ALL my steelhead flies and gear and lines (spey tips etc). well I come to find that when the wife and kids emptied out a shed after the hail the THREW IT OUT. THE WHOLE BAG!!!

    So I need some advice.

How do I react? I am so choked I cant even talk to my wife right now... but if I get upset she'd never understand the value of it anyways.

Anyways, I just thought I would vent somewhere.... and I know y'all would KNOW the pain of this loss...

I think I am going to go fishing with what's left (at least I have another bag with a bunch of stream / river fishing gear)

    :$*%&: :$*%&: :$*%&:

I think I'm going to be sick for you. Thats going to be a while to get over that one.

Sorry Brian. When you calm down I probably have a Islander trout series plus spool I'll bargain on with you.

    Dave

  4. With all the good rods, reels and lines out there , it can get a little confusing on what to purchase. Join us April 28 , 11 am to 4 pm and cast some excellent quality rods, lines and reels from Snowbee / Beulah . What ever you fancy, Singlehand, Spey or Switch. Meet Courtney Ogilvie from Nile Creek Flyshop on Vancouver Island, he is a excellent teacher, caster, awesome fly tyer and his love for Steelhead speaks for itself. Just a fun guy to hang out with. Courtney will bring along one of his Prostaffers with Snowbee, Colin Dunn who will help with casting, your Questions. Colin is a exceptional teacher and is very approachable, and has a ton of knowledge about Southern Alberta waters . Also a very good flytyer and rodbuilder.

These two rod companys are making a huge statement in Europe and USA markets. Come cast a few, you will be surprised . The Snowbee flylines are maybe the best lines on the Market, they design, others follow. Come cast some Beulah Switch rods and see what the Calgary market is missing . Their flylines are matched to their rods, no other manufacture offers this.

There will be a door prize for the most accurate cast, best out of 5 casts. So were looking for a few hotshots. Also enjoy a hamburger/ hotdog. Sorry no Cake .

On Sunday the 29th you can also join Courtney and learn some fishing tips ,on river fishing. 12 pm till 3 on the Bow. You must sign up for this the cost is $70.00 ea

    - Care and handling of big pike

    - Casting and retrieves

    - Fly in camps

  6. Jake Gotta {aka Dekkard} will be at SouthBow this sat am 10:30 till noon.

Should be a good one packed with a ton of info, great for all levels of fly fishers.

Dekkard will cover different techniques from deep water nymphing, times of the year & conditions, small stream nymphing, a few options for rig set ups, how to identify good water and of course the bugs .

You will find out that there are allot more options to nyphing than you might think.

Bring your gear it's supposed to be decent weather so go for a fish after the seminar.

    Thanks, Dave & Mike.

  7. I have been looking for streamers to swing this year with the spey rod and have seen quite a few on the net with spun deer hair heads. They certainly look good and probably move a lot of water, but it seems odd to have a pattern meant to be fished deep with such a buoyant head. Each hair is hollow for insulating the deer, making it a good floating material. Most of these patterns also require a lot of lead wraps or a conehead. Is this purpose of this to make the fly neutrally buoyant and get it down with a sink tip? Why wouldn't you want the pattern to sink quickly? Is there another alternative to the deer for a full head without the buoyancy? Do you think the cutting pattern make a big difference, I guess by flattening the bottom and angling the top you are promoting negative lift as well in a faster current. Any thoughts?

I tied these up without deer hair heads in the mean time. Anyone got some go to sculpin patterns they are willing to share?

sculpin.jpgNasty lookin tie dude. That will rock some fish. Another suggestion for sculpin head is Pheasant rump palmered and clipped to shape or The marabou off the legs of the pheasant palmered on and then formed to shape, it absorbs alot of water

and also sheds water when you cast so your fly gets down quicker . Keep tyin those nasties they look great.

  10. On any given day in the summer you'll see a variety of boats floating the Bow.Some old some new, they all work.My question is what do you like or dislike?Things like oar lock positions, seat hight ,rocker, side height and rod holders and the like.

I'm thinking of building a "Bow" drifter, something a little more suited for our slower water, maybe wider bottom with lower sides and less rocker to float the shallows.Better rod storage and maybe even a bow mount electric for when the east wind kicks up or you just don't feel like rowing.

    Interested to here your thoughts.

    Hey Mike

I fished out of the 16' Flypod from Clacka and thought the rod storage was great tho rods had to be broken down to store tho left rigged ready to go. Lock and Go system, indoor outdoor carpet to step in and out of. Great for Lakes, with you and your 6 rods in the boat ,now you can take 10 rods.

    Hello fishermen,

Products come & go, the good ones seem to last forever.

This has allways been our opinion of Hardy which is why we are stocking it at our store.

Hardy realizing the current economy has become very aggressive with there pricing and continuelly developing new products.

The latest is the Ultralight reel which absolutly stands alone in terms of quality & price.

There is no comparable reel in this price range, starting at only $219, and has 7 sizes all the way up to great spey reels sizes.

You need to check these out at the link posted below.

From there clothing to waders & boots it's all an excellant bang for your hard earned buck !

A real sleeper is the Grey's GRXI series of rods.Starting at just $200 I have not felt any other rod in this price range with this fit and finish, 4 piece in a nice tube that even comes close. IT feels the way any $400 plus rod would feel, light & powerfull but with finesse.

We will have in GRXI spey rods which ring in at $250-$325

Anyhow Hardy & Greys has so much to offer that you have to try a few to really appreciate how diverse their line up is !

Come check out what we have in stock or give us a call.

We have another large order due to arrive first week in Dec, we will have a few of the new Zenith rods in stock, these are heirloom quality, nickle silver ferral plugs etc...

Christmas is coming get your wish list together.

  13. Howdy All, I really enjoy my plywood floor w marine carpet in my jon. I bought the jon completed that way. I want to do the same for my alum lake boat. Do any of you know where to get marine grade carlet at a decent price? Any feedback is welcome. Thx :caffeetime:

I used the outdoor carpet from Home depot, comes grey or green. Last stuff lasted 8-10 years of pretty constant use.

Redid mine over last winter, this time coated the plywood first with 1/2 doz coats of spar varnish, again HD

they are discontinuing that product come 2012 so get some while you can.

Glued carpet with carpet adhesive using the notched trowel. Staple around edges of carpet and your done.

  14. Didn't read all the posts but it is an interesting subject. At certain times of year nymphing will always outproduce any other method in certain areas.

Someone who has never caught a steelhead might wonder why not nymph if you can catch more fish. But the natural progression for steelheaders is realizing it is not about the numbers of fish. ITS ALL ABOUT GETTING THE HOT FISH. And I like to think that I might fish a method that will get me more of those HOT fish. And that is with either a dry when temperature permits or a wet with a light sink tip. I want fish that moves to my fly, more aggressive and typically fresher. Having a fish hammer my swung wet is a much more appealing than seeing an indicator go down. Or watching a steelhead boil, roll several times on several casts (changing flies to entice him) to eventually hammer it. No comparison.

Also nymphing eggs is usually best higher up in the tribs where there are other salmon spawning. I also try not be that high up in the system - older not as HOT fish.

Yes you can target fresher fish.

If you continue to fish for steelhead you WILL eventually understand what I am talking about.

Good luck. In this case ignorance is an excuse.
