I have a couple of well used waders that I have repaired too many times and they still leak so I have bought new ones. Question now is what do I do with these older ones as it bothers me to chuck them in the garbage? ANy options would be apreciated

I just recently purchased a 7 ft 6 in 5 wt. Cortland Leon Chandler graphite fly rod and can't seem to find much info on the net about this type but a lot about Mr. Chandler's fiberglass types from the past. Does anyone here know about his graphite rods or can link me to a site where I can find out about the history of these rods? Thanx in advance

More info about this year's new regs for the Upper Red Deer River from the Forestry trunk road to the Glennifer dam and all of the tributaries such as the Fallen Timber, the Raven, the James and all steams that flow into the big Red since the oil spill of last year the Government has made these rivers catch and release for all species and no maggots or live bait allowed as they wish to check the population of all the species in the river shed after the oil spill down steam of the Sundre area

I was up in that area on Saturday the 4th and almost all of the smaller streams are still well covered with ice and not even close to being fishable. Unless mother nature really hits the area well with heat I think that you would be wasting the gas!!

Since I live close by to this store I dropped in last night to have a look see. Once you get over the WOW factor as this store is huge and it feels like you are in the forest and shopping with the animals. It's three stories high and has a huge tank of native Alberta fish. Oh my. But then when I found the fly fishing department the WOW factor disappears as it is about the same size as the one at Wholesale . In fact the two areas look very much the same in design (So who copied who?) and that's when I realized that the marketing people of Bass Pro didn't think that fly fishing is as important as Bass fishing here in Alberta.So someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't remember the last time I caught a small mouth or wide mouth bass here in Alberta! There is more tying supplies at Fish Tales and more rods to choose from at the other local stores. So I guess I'm a tad bit disappointed about Bass Pro giving us fly fishers such a small attention and I can only hope that they realize that we do have a lot of fly fishers here too. Although the lure lunkers and bait chuckers are certainly in heaven at this store just not me!!

Birchy: There are three things that come to mind as I have been tying with the Danvise for over a year now. First make sure that the top adjustment is properly tightened that hold the main jaw still and in place. If it is loose or the knob won't keep it still then you could have a problem with the threads and the knob itself. Also there is a proper method to mount the hook in the Danvise jaws. It goes something like this (from the CD) - Put the hook into the jaws and tighten the jaws till they just start to touch or lightly grab the hook using the side knob. Then using the locking arm underneath it will then grab the hook much tighter and should keep it in position. There is also a possibility that the jaws mechanism has gotten bent somehow. The best way to test this is to use a straight sewing needle and mount it like you do a hook and then rotate to see if it stays straight and doesn't wobble. I also bought a Danvise off of ebay for the same price and free shipping. Have had it all winter and love it. It definitely improved my tying and finishing techniques. Rotary is the way to go and I'm not sorry that I did so. Just be careful of the way that you load the hook into the jaws (especially when you change hook sizes!!)and follow the advice on the dvd and all is happy.

I've noticed in many of the photo posts that people have very expensive reels and rods (in the hundreds and hundreds of dollars) in their catch photos sitting in the river getting soaking wet. I for one try not to dunk my expensive equipment in the water as it could get dirt and other nasties that would damage and or ruin their performance and let alone the looks. How many of the members here do the same as I do and not allow their rigs to get soaking wet how many just let them go for a swim and worry about the problems later?

Rocknbugs: That area is my all summer fishing grounds as I have a trailer parked in that area. I usually fish the Fallen Timber the Upper Red deer and the James River Bridges. The fishing has been extremely poor since the August long weekend and no you weren't in the wrong spots on the Fallen Timber. Unfortunately when the river flows and levels drop at this time of year the big browns migrate out of this stream as the water between the pools gets very low and freeze up is a problem in the winter so they head on down to the Red Deer for the winter. It seems that we had heavy rains almost every weekend in August and the steams were extremely dirt all year in this area and the Red Deer has been very fast and dirty all summer. Run off took a long time to settle down and we did have a few good weeks in July but as I said August has been very poor. I suggest that you try other areas south of Calgary as I don't see things getting any better if these constant major thunderstorms don't stop before the snow happens. Usually snow starts around the end of September and stays for a long time. All in all it has been very poor fishing these foothill streams this year in the area.

I regularly fish the Fallen Timber closer to highway 22 and it produces some really good sized browns. They come upstream from the Red Deer for the summer and stay till freeze up starts then move back down. You get really good mayfly hatches in the evening and the extended mayfly in brown and grey work well. Be aware of your tippet size as these big boys run hard and can break off really easy as they like to snap their heads back and forth quick and hard. Keep an eye on the river flow site as this river is slowing down very nicely and should be fishable in a week or so. One of my favs
