  1. As we're in hopper season right now, I was wondering what you guys use for a hopper? I tend to use "hopper" as a general term, which can mean a Turk's Tarantula, stimmy, club sandwich, chernobyl ant, or a standard Letorts hopper.

So what is your favourite hopper that you use?

For me, it's the mighty Turk's Tarantula, for the Bow and other streams.

  2. All I know is that when I use the exact same flies as the guys I'm fishing with, I'll still catch twice as many fish, and I'll even let them choose which part of the pool to start at.

As for the Bow, I have to credit the Hawg for my success there. After fishing with him for a day, I learned so many little things and my learning curve went straight up. He doesn't fish pretty, but he catches big fish like crazy!

fishfreak, Hawgstoppah and robert ... I would put presentation at about 40% not 90%. One of my fishing buddies is evidence of the lower rating. You can give him the right flies, tell and show him how to fish them and he still doesn't catch fish. It's kind of like the guy to stands on the bank and repeatedly false casts ... it doesn't matter how beautiful the line in the air looks ... the fish are in the water. If you're not fishing where the fish are feeding, I don't care how beautiful or accurate your presentation is, you're not going to catch fish.

  3. I generally tell them what I'm using if they're asking nicely. :) I figure they're asking for a reason (new to the water, new to flyfishing, etc.), so I should help them out. I'm thankful for the people I've run into when I was starting out. Some would even offer some of their flies to me, so I've been doing the same.

Also, you can tell a person exactly what you're using, and he may still not have any success unless he's fishing in the right spots using the right technique. This will at least remove one of the unknowns and give him a better chance. They would still have to figure other things out.

  4. I was out for a walk near my house late morning yesterday and came across a bunch of risers by the bank. They've been rising here for a couple days at the same time of day now. It was fun watching these 7 fish taking turns surfacing, but I couldn't see what they were eating. I was going to grab my rod, but thought it would be better just to watch them and enjoy it.

I'm glad to see that there ARE fish near my house!

  5. I love a happy ending!

Didn't need to. I called the RAP line and an officer called me back right away. He said he was two minutes away, and he got there in less than that. He did find the fish, and had the SUV torn apart and all of their stuff (cooler with fish, fishing licences, etc) were all spread out on the vehicle. He gave me a wink as we headed down to the river with the the drift boat. They were definetely caught in the act! :clapping:

  6. So did you get the license plate at least? You can still call it in. Confrontation might be tricky, but subtly getting the license plate would help RAP track them down.

Was down at the Fish Creek Park boat launch and noticed some persons carrying a large bag (containing a nice sized brown) and placing it in their car. Afterwards they headed back down to the river to fish more. I was concerned that these people were poaching and wanted to at least have a warden come and check things out. I do not keep fish form the river and really never knew what the regs were around keeping fish. I could not find a RAPP sign anywhere. I had to call the Bow River Shuttles and got the number from them. The number is now saved in my phone, but my question is " Are there any RAP signs anywhere on the Bow?" Maybe I am blind, but would it not be a good idea to have these posted right on the information boards located at the put ins and take outs? I am sure this should help people who are not avid fisherman (dogwalkers, hikers, etc) but want to report someone who is potentially poaching? Having a posted number would have helped me at the time I wanted to report as well. I could not find a number anywhere down at Fish Creek Boat Launch. Anyone have ideas or comments on this? ;mornCoffee:

  7. I don't know much about fishing the Upper/Lower lakes, but there are lots here that can speak to that.

You can head out to Elbow Lake, which is a 20-30 minute drive from your campground, and then a 1.2km hike to the lake. That should be doable with kids. There's lots of little brookies there, and you can keep up to 5 of them if you want to eat them. The lake is overpopulated with brookies, so you'd do the lake some good by taking a few out. Fishing is great from shore.

Anything small (size 18 Adams, parachute Adams, mosquitoes, griffiths gnats, etc.) work well with 6x tippet, and for kids, you can tie on a bobber, then 2 feet of tippet and a small nymph. Cast out and reel in, and you should get some tugs.

    Hope that helps.
