  6. By far the most memorable fish this year was on January 2nd. We were in New Orleans over X-Mas and the New Year. My 12 year old Son and I did a Guided trip with Travis Holeman. We fished HARD all day with only a few smaller Black Drum to show for our time. I had been teaching my Son how to cast a fly rod for a few weeks before we left on the trip, and he had picked it up quite nicely. We needed to get back to the marina by 3pm because we had reservations in New Orleans for Dinner that we had to make 8 months ahead. The Guide had taken us to a bunch of different places that are his "Best Spots", but we only saw a few Redfish, so with only 1 hour left before we had to be back at the dock, he took us to a spot where he said that there are some BIG guys hanging around. We got to the spot, and we started looking for the tell Tale signs of RedFish. After 20 minutes or so, we saw a Nice Bull milling around and went into action. My son took his 8wt rod made a few false casts and fired out a nice 40' cast right in front of the fish. One quick strip, the fish looked at the fly, second big strip and BANG!!!!!! FISH ON!!! My son fought this Big Red like he had been FlyFishing for years, and after 15 Minutes and several runs well into his backing, he landed this Beauty!! 25.5 lbs of beautiful Redfish!!! I will NEVER forget my Sons FIRST EVER fish on the fly!!! Rick

  21. I personally love my 5wy Launch, But for a small creek rod, I would say the Launch 4 wt is a bit to stiff, IMHO. The Launch is being replaced very soon with the Flight, which is a slightly more limber rod and would be better suited for smaller streams and rivers. Rick
  22. If you want a great book that is totally different than the normal flyfishing book, go pick up "What Fish See" Great book that teaches you what colors are best at different depths, water types, etc.... The book was written by an Optometrist that is a flyfisher. Rick
  23. I agree Jack; I love the lady Mc Connel. one of the best Emerging Chironomid patterns EVER!!!! Rick
  24. I agree with you Jack, I am not trying to say that reading a river is in any way the same as reading a lake, but the general Idea is the same to a point. If you understand where the trout would hold, and where the insects would inhabit, then........ Yes my answer is simplified, but by the sounds of the question posted here, it is better (IMHO) to simplify it to an extent. You are 100% correct with the fact that Oxygen levels, nutrients, etc... are VERY important things to learn in a stillwater lake setting, but I personally try to stay away from these details when I am teaching the beginner (too confusing). Personally, I think that knowing the behaviors and movement of the insects in relation to the feeding habits of the trout are FAR more important to the beginner than the oxygen levels, nutrients, etc..... this is more for the Flyfisher that already has the basic knowledge of the insects and the trout behavior, again (IMHO) Once a New Flyfisher knows that a Dragon fly Nymph will tend to be found in areas that are weeded or have debris that the dragon can hide in ambush for hunting purposes, then he can have a better understanding of when the trout will be able to feed on them Along with this, The new Flyfisher needs to understand how a particular insect behaves when it comes time to emerge into adulthood. Again Jack, I do agree with you 100% that all the aspects you mentioned are VERY important and that EVERY Flyfisher should know the in's and out's of them, but for the beginner, there is plenty to learn in just getting to know the trout and insect behavior. I guess we are in a way saying the same thing, just in different ways. Rick
  25. Well, we should make a point to hook up if you do come out. Rick
