  11. The remaining populations of pure WCT are certainly very few in numbers and these populations themselves are often extremely small, less than a few hundred individuals which is an issue in itself.

According to the last published genetics report, there were no Yellowstone Cutthroats or various hybrids in the Castle system (Appendix 2 @ [url="http://www.srd.alberta.ca/BiodiversityStewardship/SpeciesAtRisk/DetailedStatus/AmphibiansFishReptiles.aspx)[/url]

Its also true that many cutthroats have been able to "escape" the rainbow invasion by heading upstream into cooler waters but this isn't a good thing.

The populations of cutts tend to be isolated from each other which can lead to serious problems. Inbreeding, and at a higher risk of extirpation due to things like landslides, or reduced spawning areas from increased fine sediments due to logging. We're talking about populations that can be small as a few dozen individuals. Check out Dave Mayhood's (a local Fisheries Biologist that specializes in WCT) website for links to relevant published papers on WCT, on logging effects and other land use effects. http://www.fwresearch.ca/Library.html

I really urge everyone on this forum to spread the word about this proposed logging because like Paul said, it isn't too late.

There is a list of individuals to email, please do so. Take the time to express your concern stating the fragile nature of a threatened species like WCT and maybe someone will take notice.

  12. BULL TROUT FLIES & TECHNIQUES
Brent Piche will show some of his beastly flies for Bull Trout, and what he finds effective for techniques on our rivers. He'll cover his personal tackle choices, as well as ways to fish his monster bugs. A popular seminar last year with some pretty cool tying techniques, he has a few new tricks up his sleeve as well.

All seminars start at 10:00 am and will end between 11:00 and noon. There is no charge and no pre-registration required. Simply drop by the shop and enjoy the seminar.
  13. Spring Steelhead Fishing, Terrace BC, 2011

If you were at the International Fly Fishing Film tour on Thursday night, or at the Fly Fishing Expo this past weekend, you likely saw the Fly Nation trailer for the Skeena drainage. There is no better time to experience the best steelhead drainage in the world then this spring. With an unbelievable Fall run in 2010, this could be the spring fishery of the decade. Plus, there is no netting to intercept what could be the next world record.

You'll stay at the Yellow Cedar Lodge, a spectacular facility located on the banks of the famed Skeena, just West of Terrace. Along with the gourmet cooking of Red Seal chef Alf Leslie, The lodge features a mixture of private single and double bedrooms, a bar and games room. It also includes a lounge, gym and cardio equipment room, sauna, hot tub, wrap around porch, and a large dining area and bar for sharing daily fishing stories! This is possibly the prettiest lodge in Northern BC.

This trip is a great introduction to some of the most aggressive spring fish in the world, as well as a perfect trip for the experienced angler. On the multitude of river's available , you'll swing large bugs for some of the largest steelhead of the year.

You'll get to fish some of the coolest, most intimate coastal streams. Some of these rivers don't require a long cast or a huge mend, and can offer some of the largest fish of the year.

The later dates also offer opportunities for some of the Chromest Chinook Salmon around. These fish will test every last bit of gear you own, and are arguably the strongest freshwater fish in the world.

    158.jpg

    Available Dates are the following:

    -- April 4 to 10

    -- April 17 to 23

    TYING STEELHEAD FLIES
We'll go beyond the typical Intruder tying (not that we won't tie at least one!) and show some newer bugs that are easy to tie, but have proven themselves. We'll also cover some of the fly rigging that is commonly questioned, and might tie a classic bug or two as well. This is a great time to ask questions, share stories with fellow steelhead addicts and feel free to bring your own creations as well.

    See you at the shop!
