  1. For years my grandfather raised game birds in Grassy Lake (For those that live down there they know where I am talking about) and I still have alot of his contacts and have been buying feathers and what not off them and was just recently told that alot of the big wig clothing designers out of New York and Los Angels are asking to buy the stock for the next 6 years (it takes roughly 3 years to grow a cape) so if you think this is going away you can think again cause if the fashion designers are willing to pay for stock 6 years in advance they are projecting this so called fad to last for a while.

  2. I belive there was some changes to the graphite that was used (Using the new kennitic graphite) which makes the rod lighter and more enjoyable to cast.

So there is a huge change (Always is when there is a change in the graphitie) to the rod, but of course there is some branding in it, what company would not re-brand something when it starts to go stale in sales.

I also belive the only companies using this new technology is Hardy, Sage and Loomis.

  3. True enough, but I don't think the article was written 20 years ago, when "Indian" was an acceptable (sort of) term for First Nations. Besides, those earrings are made, sold, and worn by little neo-hippie girls. Natives use feathers to make headdresses, bustles and ceremonial garb. They make their earrings primarily out of beads.

These aren't my only problems with the article. He claims that a novice can tye a dozen or more foam beetles in an hour; after teaching many beginners, I don't think there's a pattern simple enough for that. Occasionally you come across a "natural" who might do a half-dozen in an hour. Tyers like that are about one in twenty.

To me, the biggest issue is that it's an article on alternatives to hackle, but of all the featured patterns, the only alternative material used is foam. Sure some have antron in them, but still use hackle or foam for floatation. He mentions deer hair a few times, but doesn't provide an example. And he doesn't even mention CDC or Snowshoe Hare.

I just think when you call an article "awesome", that sets the bar pretty high, and this one falls short.

I guess it is all a matter of perspective cause I really enjoyed reading the artical and found it to be AWSOME and did not pick it apart but took it for what it is.

  4. I guess it all depends on when the artical was actually written, might of been at that time and then the artical was publish at a later date when capes became hard to find.

  5. If you haven't seen it yet check out the new Fly Fusion magaizine and there is a artical in it that is titled WHO NEEDS HACKLE. Awsome artical by Jermey Davis (Inventor the the Evil wevil) and he shares some of his dry fly patterns that he uses foam instead of hackle, cool drake pattern in it.

  6. I'm just in the market for a change again been using the fishpond vest but I'm finding I'm putting way to much in it. (I know empty out the 20 box of flies would help) I like the idea of the hip pack. The big question is how water proof are they. I do tend to wade where a hip pack could be in water part of the time.

    Tight Lines Always

    Dennis S :laxfisher::fish_jump:

    Dennis,

I have been using the fishpound hip pack for just about 2 years now and what I do if I go out in the water is I move the back up so it is strapped around my chest, however I generally do not go any deeper then my knees (Sometimes when I am crossing a waterway I might go up to my hips) I just find any deeper is taking a risk I do not want to take.

Anyways the things I like about the fishpound hip pack is

    1. It can hold alot more then it looks like, the biggest pocket I use for my boxes, the second biggest I use for my tippet, wallet, phone, etc.... and then there is a front pocket with a foam hook holde and it flips out so it is very easy to use.

    2. Very light and very durable, I have throwen mine in boats, back of vechicles in the bush and it still looks new (Mind you it has been a bit sun bleach but that is not a huge deal)

    3. The two spots for water or drinks are also nice as they have a strap to tighten around smaller containers and holds empty timmies cups very nicely.

Have a look and see what you like, remeber buy something you want and not what the masses tell you to buy.

  7. Curious why you would say that , when the SJW is presented using the same fly fishing techniques as any other nymph.

I completely agree with you on this, but some of the eltitist and puriest think using a SJW is no better then a Rappela, to me it really doesn;t matter what the fly is as long as its profile, and presentation is what the trout wants.

I even fish light chenneal worms under hoppers.

Anyways that is just my opion and others may disagree with me on this but whatever, I don't tell others how to fish I just like to share what I have found to work for me, and if there is a better way thats cool, just explain why to me so I can understand myself, I really hate people that say *hit with absoultly no explanation its almost like they feel I have to bow down and worship them.

  8. I was out on the river a couple of days ago with toolman and we were sitting there enjoying the day when all of a sudden we saw two plastic oars come floating down the river, then we saw a empty plastic raft come floating down the river, thinking someone might be in trouble we looked up river to see this guy pulling himself out of the river, the sad thing was he was still holding onto his plastic bag full of beer.

I just had to shake my head, these drunken fools are the ones that get killed. I don't mind a beer while out on the water, but really people drinking so much they get drunk and fall out of the boat and face with the realization that they could die, espically with the river so high and so fast, just takes you getting you leg caught in a rock and then you are underwater.

  9. I actually have no problem with courteous jet boats. Its the ocean-going monster that was on the river Sunday that was an issue, and makes a bad example for others who do play nice. Seriously, he was more than sea worthy and you could probably live on it 365 days a year. Funny thing is we got it on go-pro. Should try to make a funny clip of it....

I agree with this statement totally.

I know a few people that have Jetboats and they are very curtious to others on the river.

The problem is that we like to sterotype people all the time and if you have a bad experince with one jetboat then they all are the same which is not the case.

I use to be a jetboat hater on the boards till I went out with a very curtious jetboater and found that all the hate should of been directed at a few people but instead got directed to everyone.

I have seen the fire department boat on the river racing up and down the river causing wakes for the last five years now, and they do not have any lights or sirens, should they?

Unforntantly like everything in life there are those who care and those who do not.

  10. I have some minor back problems and I have found that a chest pack puts weight on the front causeing me the hunch over which by the end of the day very sore in the back and shoulders. Likewise a backpack does the samething.

Like max said I have been using the fishpound hip pack for the las two years and find that it sits perfect on my lower back I do not feel like I am front or back heavy.

Also how many boxes and things do you really need to bring out with you, I found that I was carring way more then I actually needed and it wasn't until I started slimming down my boxes that it became lighter.

Do I have alot of boxes at home, you sure beat you I do but these boxes are for my surplus of flies or for flies that are not working.

I suggest to reduce the amount you are carring fiorst then find a system that works for you.

  11. I think PGK problem is not with the rod itself, I think it is just the type of action that he does not like. I like fast tip recoveries but a mid flex rod.

I have casted a couple of the bvk's with streamers that have a ton of lead wrapped on it, and it did take me a couple of casts before I got the hang of it, had to adjust my casting in order to cast it. Needless to say I would not be buying one for myself as it is not suited towards my casting likes.

  12. I would also add the following flies.

    1. Stone Fly Nymph and Dry

    2. Copper Johns (Brassies are a varation but I would do Copper John before Brassies)

    3. Midges nymphs and Dry

    4. Prince nymphs

    5. Bow Buggers (Leeches)

    6. Clousers

    7. Muddlers

That is all I can think of right now while I am at work.
