  1. Folks,

Forget the wading boots and all that stuff. You need room in your waders for insulation. If your boots are comfortable with street socks in the summer, adding a layer of more socks in the winter compresses blood flow and you get even colder.

But I like the advice of what to do when you get cold.

1] Walk up and down briskly

2] Jump up and down [ this one may get you hauled away]

    3] Stand in shallower water

4] How about a decent fire - that will keep the ajoining landowners pissed off.

I suspect it would be just plain easier to get decent fitting footware.

Got a kick outta a young guy last spring @ one of the local shops. Went in there to get some breathable waders. Told him I was looking for waders in stout or maybe just plain fat sizes as these waders were to be used in my pontoon boating while sitting in weather conditions that required 3 layers of fleece + 4 pairs of socks. Well, he drags out a "boys of summer" wader that made me suddenly slimmer. So, I put on my 4 pair of socks and my 3 fleeces. Took about 5 minutes to pull the waders up and then I waddled over to a seat and attempted to sit down. Ya' right!. So we started to peel the waders off, Things went OK will we got to the foot part. Now those socks weren't about to part with those neoprene feet. Thank God he was stubborn otherwsie I might have been buried in those things. He finally admitted that they had no stout waders in size 14+ feet. I went elsewhere.

  2. Chris,

Turf the wading gear of summer and get yourself some old fashioned boot foot waders sized for about 3 sock worth.

You will never have cold feet again.

Mind you, there is a price to be paid for comfort. You may not be asked to be a poster boy for Sage//Redington/TFO and the like.

My old and much used rubber boot foot waders have never let me down. Mine are industrial waders bought for $120 from Acklands. Heck, they even have steel toes.

  3. I just plain don't get it. Fish respond to natural colours - you know the ones - earth tones. Therefore your indicators

shouldn't be about you but about the fish.

So what is to be done?

Use colours that are part of the natural world. I tend to use snow colours or Alberta Wildrose colours (note: don't confuse my indicators colours with endorsement of any political party), and of course dirt colours.

Depending on the season, adjustments are made to the colour used.

Now there is nothing wrong with bright pink or chartreuse on HOT PANTS!

  4. Folks,

Spray Lakes logging operation was looking for representative to the Public Advisory Group who supply's advice from various stakeholder groups to Spray Lakes regarding thier operations.

Above is some info on the Public Advisory Group and its mandate.

Is it worthwhile - depends I guess. I sit as the Trout Unlimited reprentative to Sundre Forest Products advisory group. The Public Advisory group have effected some changes + I have learned a whole lot of the how's/when's of forest management.

Need more info, give me a shout via email

  5. Guys,

All Vibram soles are not the same. The soles on your mountain boots is not designed for wet wading condition. The sole is harder and therefore lasts longer.

Just replacing the sole with Vibram doesn't mean you will get the best Vibram sole for wading boots.

    Look over Vibrams site www.bcguidelines.ca/pdf/warfarin_management_food_guide.pd

And pay attention to the VSM section.

  6. Folks,

My thanks for all your help. I put the list together below. Lots of great suggestions

I was surprised that Allen or Okuma didn't make the list.

  7. Dryangler,

I did a whoops on the Clearwater. From highway 22>Rocky was OK the last time i drifted it. Don't float the upper section. People die in there.

And the main Ram is floatable in some sections. The British Army floated it a lot with only a few rappels over the falls. In the chutes of the Ram bodys's may take months to recover.

Play on the Bow - it is safer.

  8. Guys,

Thank for the advice. Will look into both the TFO and Lamson.

No fear about the bamboo use. They are still the preferred weapon for trout. The graphites shine for pike, suckers and loading my outboard.

  9. Folks,

Need some advice. Looking for a reel for a 9 wt. Graphite rod that I will be using for some pike fishing.

As pike rarely pull any length of line, a long backing is not needed. I intend to use a 9 wt. pike taper on te rod.

Looking to spend <> $200 or less. Need a reel where I can acquire a spare spool.

    Any suggestions?

  10. I suspect the router. The home router has been replaces once and the business ones twice. Same issues both times - blinking yellow. I lived with the home one for about year till it was landfill time.

The business ones were a much larger issue as the router was dropping data making backups tough when dealing with multiple machines. A few minutes of yellow blinking light got it turfed quick.

  11. Live2play,

Been using bobbers since 1970 and finally found a product that works. Yarn - make that macreme yarn. 50 yards is $4.79 at the macreme store. http://www.macramesuperstore.com/craft-cord/Bonnie-Braid-6mm-Macrame-Cord-50-yard-White__BB6-50-WHITE-spc--spc--spc-001.aspx

Each yarn indicator ( bobber) lasts a year or so. Casts readily, doesn't tangle, costs little & detects strikes where cookies and balloons do not.

And did I mention, macreme works as a winging material in stones, caddis, mayflies and Diptera, I have all the buggy colours.

If you wonder how it can be used. See the article on my web site http://bamboorods.ca/indicators.html

And yes, I 've tried thingaboobers. They slip down the leader. Great idea poorly executed. I do use dis-connect cookies for chironomids fishing in depths greater than 30'.

  12. Taco,

See what using Power Bait does for ya'!

And to help with the February blahs, go fishing.

    It works!

And I was digging through this and that the other day and found two San Francisco vintage Winston glass rods. Both were part of the "little fella" series. A 7'0" 3 wt and another @ 8'6" six weight. I made them from blanks. They have some experience. You interested?

  13. Just so you are aware!

PDF's have to be DOT approved for use in Canada. Some of the BassPro and Cabella's products are not approved. If you are wading, you don't need one legally. Boating is another issue.

I use Mustang's. Made in Canada, DOT approved and I got it @ CDN Tire. My wife's came from the Fishin' Hole. Notice the Canadian connection!
