  1. Gee, what happened to 'Global Warming'? Or was that 'Climate Change'?
  2. Those are the same numbers I have........from the same place. I'm just going to make it......maybe get a bit creative with it. Thanks
  3. Been looking at this taper/rod and there appears to be some discrepencies. Some list it as a 5/6, a straight 5wt or a straight 6wt. Which is it? Also I've found referances to a 204L and 204H. I relize that Panye made several tapers under the same model number and this appears to be one of those cases. Can anyone clear this up. I've went to all the usual sources without much luck. (rod building forum, classic cane etc)
  4. Every time I go up that way and look at this creek I think "gee thats a nice little spring creek, wonder whats in ?" Usually, some of the locals start giving you the evil eye, however I once asked one of them about it. They flatly denied the existance any sort of fish in it, then told me to go down to the Bow and fish, which was in full run-off at the time. So whats the real deal with it?
  5. You may want to up line one size as well and do those 'flicky' casts that Courtney suggested. I've found that I actually make shorter casts here on the Bow than I did back in Ontario, even though the Bow is quite wider/larger than any Ontario trout stream with the exception of one! (You likely know the spot Courtney) Myself, I'm usually using the much looked down upon wind-cutter in 6/7/8 for my 6 wt rod, it'll cast as short as 25' but still hit out 75-80' easily. I'll carry an Elixir 380 when I feel the need to hit the far bank. In both cases about 1-3' have been cut back to turn over heavy tips better.
  6. If they are Simms, do not repair seam leaks yourself! Send them back to them to repair them, otherwise you can just about toss your warrenty in the trash. Otherwise, I've had good luck by mixing Auqa-seal with tolene to make a more liquid paste (basically store bought flex-cement) and paint it on the suspect areas. You could also buy the flex-cement in those little bottles if you don't want a mini version of Sarnia Ontario on your residence! Tolene is very flammable, toxic, and I believe a possible carcinagen, mine is out in the garage.
  7. 7 (seven) kindey stones, passed 5, one at side of the road going fishing. 2 were surgery. Walked around with one for 6 months. Gashed left calf open ankle to knee taking a tire off a rim. 47 stitches. Cut a finger off and the first aid guy accidently ran it under HOT water, it's back on, just a bit crooked, hurts like a bugger in the cold. Oh yah being a millwright for 30 years..........that really hurts! Pass the tylenol and advil.
  8. Guess I'm a day late and a dollar short but; Everybody is worried about the Bloc and its views. Bottom line, Quebec will NEVER separate. Why would the spoiled brat of confederation leave? They will stay however and hold whomever ransom for its demands and idle threats of separation though. However Jack Layton is most likely the main pot stirrer in this (really is Dion bright enough to master mind this?). Jackie boy would have us running around in matching green suits with red stars on our hats if he gets his way. He's likely eyeing power after Dion steps down as Liberal leader, that's scary, as someone who came from Ontario, I know what the NDP can do!
  9. Phone in the licence plate of the car(s) later. It's easy to find the right one 1) write them down with vehicle description 2) Nice and polite talk to these guys and with a line such as " hey man there are a couple kids in the parking lot screwing with a..........."(I'll use one of them at ramdom) 3) these guys will usually say, "no thats not mine I got the whatever car" I cut no slack with these guys after all the BS I used to see in Ontario
  10. A lot of manufacturers are telling you to go this long with the new stuff. Some synthetic oils' lubricating properties can go this long, however the detergents in the oil rarely last that long and the filters will only handle so much of the contaminates before they start to by-pass. The normal acids that are created in the engine are also building up. The only true way to extend oil changes is through lab analyses such as what heavy trucks and locomotives do. An engine job is $6000+ an oil change is (should) be under $50, like the Fram slogan used to say,"you can pay me now, or pay me latter!" Changing your oil 5000-6000 kms is cheap insurance. My 1983 Toyota 4x4 is changed every 4500-5000kms, after 386000km's it burns about less than half a cup of oil between changes, mostly through leaky valve stem seals. I dont even check it between changes once.
  11. I once worked with an auto mechanic who was trying to pass himself off as a millwright. Since then I do every thing from oil changes to clutch replacements (its not a footrest dear!)myself.
  12. Give 'er! Yup, I'd rather fish with my Scott LS2 1206 (missed out on those 1205's.... #$%^) and carry a 4 or 5 wieght for those picky risers when the need to two hand it calls. I still find the switch useful, but if the wife ever tells me one has to go, than the switch would be it. Lets face it we really only need two or three rods to fish just about any where, so all these other rods and styles are just to keep things interesting and different.
  13. Good topic, could be controversial. I find switch rods ideal for that late summer early fall time (now) when fish are more spread out as opposed to hugging the bank. I like working a true spey while fish are stacked in over wintering spots. A spey rod is a bit much for Bow river trout fishing, but its still fun. I find that overhead presentations with switches (dry fly) are not quite as accurate as a single hand rod, but acceptable when using larger flies. They have almost the same power as speys and thus help me on those windy days. They do suit me well when swinging wets while searching the water for fish. They don't spey cast as well, double spey, the various snap casts, etc. However they do switch cast, single spey, and scandi cast well(all basically the same) . I think the misconception people have with these is that they believe it is a one rod does all thing. As 'headscan' said switchrods over 10 1/2' are too long and heavy to single hand. That being said I have a Meiser 2 (10' 6") switch and don't find much advantage over my Sage SP 696 other than it's less tiring to use all day(two handed), and I can cast further without a lot of false casting. They are fun to fish with and thats all that matters.
  14. Try the Alberta transportation ministry, your MPP, etc , you may be able to put some heat on them with an usafe/unsecured load angle.
  15. Whoa Orvisonly...........no one called you an idiot till you started this holier than everyone else crap of "real flyfishers use only one fly". Yup the rules say we can do it, and that guys can harvest there limit etc. Until the rules change people have that right, if you don't like it, lobby the government for change, not slag other fishers. If you consider your views to be absolute, perhaps you should leave Alberta and Canada and go somewhere more in line with your ideology, such as Iran. As for the real flyfishers club I guess they don't include; -Jim and Linda Mclennan -Barry Mitchell -Joe Humphries -Gary Lafontaine -Gary Borger -Syl Nemes -Lee Wulff -likely a pile more After all they all use and describe multiple fly rigs in their literature. Call them masters or morons, but they are all well respected members of the flyfishing community. If you are firm in your convictions, go tell those of this fore mentioned group that are still alive they are not flyfishers, and start a slag-a-thon of those who are dead. See what that gets you.
  16. Five long years eh? Guess I dont have to give any feedback cause I'm in the 3 closer to 4 decade club. I'll stick my foot in my mouth and say, when you catch up we'll talk!
  17. This has gone way past anything that resembles sane conversation. I'm going fishing...............I think I'll go to Southland...........I'll be the greying middle age guy wearing the black wide brimmed hat with one box of flies in the pocket of a torn lumber-jack coat...........your welcome to join me. Ovrisonly may not want to show up because I'll be; -using nymphs, yes more than one -might be a streamer or two involved, big ones too -maybe split shot, the lead stuff too -possible sink tip -using the biggest chunk of tippet that my eyes and fingers will let me jamb through the hook eyes -using a leader less than the prescribed length -fishing a dry downstream -plain fishing downstream blind -fishing a dry...wet -fishing to non-rising fish -not modelling too much from simms, sage or ovris catalogues -swearing at the fish I wouldn't want to see a seasoned veteran puke all over their purist gear and techniques at the sight of such underling such as myself........................catching more fish than you could ever dream about! One question though. Why would you want to go fish down at Bassano if your teaching a kid to sub-flyfish? Something wrong with the fish between the weir and Carsland? Been laughed at too many times I suppose. Ovris used to sell leaders with dropper loops in them! I guess they're not so pure.
  18. Yup, speedy recovery to this guy. Bears can be any where. Two weeks ago I stopped for a whiz in Seebe down at the Bow and a black bear popped out of the brush about 50' away from me. Fortunately being originally from Northern Ontario it really wasn't a concern to me. However staying in town isn't safe either, as I'd rather deal with the four legged animals than the two legged ones spray painting graffiti on bridges.
  19. 'Traditionally' speaking, many years ago during the which is holier era of dry vs wet fly, 'casts' as gut leaders were called then, typically used 2, 3 or more wet flies on them. They were seldom longer than 4-5' and were fished with sinking lines. If you read those things called books, some of the old classic titles such as Ray Bergmann's 'Trout', Polly Rosenbergs 'tying and fishing the fuzzy nymph' and Mary Orvis's 'Favourite Flies' describes this age old method well.(I've even used 2 dries at times.) I dont think we need to get the Skues and Hewitt arguements going again after more than a hundred years. As for storing them, I simply snip them off at the top fly and wrap the whole works around the brim of my hat, sticking the flies into the hat band. Helps to wear one of those 'old fart' fedora's, they are more functional then stylish despite how Hollywood portrays them on flyfishers.
  20. I used to take great pleasure in kicking spin fishermens butts during the hex hatch/spinner fall late August back in Ontario. You could out fish them easy 10 to 1. Some years that would be the only time you'd get any much over 16"-18" next to late October/early November. It can be done.
  21. The oddest thing about this experience, and it's my first Alberta ticket and my first in a long time, is that she didn't ask to see my ownership or insurance. Is that normal here? The truck could have been stolen for all she knew. In Ontario they ask for all three pieces, licence, ownership and insurance, take it all to their cruiser and check for the validity of them and your conviction record. She just grabbed my licence wrote down the particulars at the side of the road and more or less through them back into my lap. Ran to the next 'victim' before I could ask a question. I basically sat there in a stunned state, I cant even tell you if she was RCMP or a Calgary cop. Unmarked car and nothing on the ticket telling me which. Yup, for sure this was a good old fashion make your monthly quota speed trap! Then I see that Calgary police are getting 280 Million or something to fight crime on the Suns front page...Hmm. Yah I hear you DonnieM, my previous was a bike cop too, OPP, got me doing 128 in an 80, trying to get to the spinner fall, he marked it down to 110 something to lessen the pain.
  22. So to further my Southland adventure the other day, I get down there and start fishing and the CO shows up. Asks for my licence, show it to him, everything is cool (he didn't notice I forgot to sign it, fixed that quick). Looks at the fly, thats cool. Then he asks to see the WIN card. Well its at home as I though all I needed was the paper licence I say to him. So he says that I should carry it as well, lets me off with a warning and leaves after talking about the fishing. I cant find in the regs where it says I have to carry it, just skimming through them. Whats up?
  23. So I'm going down to fish at southland, come out from under the overpass and spot a car parked way up by the traffic light. Hmm! Well I get a $103 welcome to southland greeting when I get to the light for doing 96K on the off ramp. Women cops have no humour either. At least the fish were biting well!
  24. So this may be obvious, but how do you tell the difference between a Cutt and a Cuttbow? Professional fisheries biologists always say not to use colour/colour patterns(s) to ID fish, so then what. I know the Cutts in the North Ram do look differant than the ones from say the Oldman. Are the Oldman ones then really Cuttbows?
  25. I personally prefer the integrated shooting/running line, all those loops no matter how smooth just catch in the guides handling a fish. If I understand this correctly one of the lines your proposing would be similar to an Elixir but with a slow rear taper to facilitate mending at distance and somewhat minimize having to strip in a pile of running line every time you cast. A little more presentation oriented would be nice without sacrificing being able to punch out a clouser to the middle of the river. I guess what I'm asking for is a cross between the Elixir and the Windcutter. I bet the guys back east fishing river smallmouth would love this too!
