  1. Hi Folks, thought I would share this information with the members. As I was looking up some supplies for tying I came across a notice on the Superfly Web site. On November 23-26, they are having a Black Friday sale / Warehouse Clearance at their Edmonton location. As I understand it, they will be selling discontinued stock and stock that they has not been selling. I am told that this will include all sorts of tying materials, dubbing, saddles & capes, hooks, fly fishing gear, reels, rod building etc. at very significant discount.

Check it out at their website Superfly International Inc. or on their Facebook page where more details are available (I don’t do Facebook)

P.S. I’m hoping to go myself on Nov. 23 so if anyone wants to drive up with me from Calgary, PM me.

  2. I usually stay on the sidelines on topics like this, while I have no disagreements with the initial topic/ and the "vision-framework" outlined, I feel strongly that we must have 3 more things.

    1- Enforcement people

    2- Enforcement legislative changes e.g. New/improved laws

3- Enforcement non political partisanship or self serving agencies that grow exponentially without producing results

Ideally we would have adequate funding for a responsible F&W from our Provincial Govt, without the constant intrusion of politicians. E.g a. Independent agency, still funded provincially, such that the folks there could have adequate resources, human and otherwise, proper legislative authority, enhanced as required to facilitate their responsibility etc. With an non-political oversight process/structure to ensure annual budgets are properly focussed and "at the right level" e.g. Not too big, not too small, highly focused etc.

There is no rocket science involved here, but since it may at best be a dream, at my age I'm giving myself permission to dream on....

  3. Very cool! I'm hoping to maybe get to 100, never mind being able to cast any kind of rod, spin or fly, in any manner near what this fine old pescatorial centenarian is doing here! So the moral here may well be, never get rid of that "old fav rod & reel or flies you tied" , you never know when you will use them next!

  4. Lost a black plastic fly box this morning at the MacK boat launch, probably with a spool of 3X tippet. Stupidly left it on the trailer fender and then moved the boat to make room for the shuttles coming in. If found, please PM me. Sure would like to have my bugs back!

  5. The best pattern that I use to imitate perch fry is made with DNA fibres. Really easy tie, white on top+light Yellow+ gray and then one more white on the bottowm. Just shape the back end and go get'em! Just make sure you use GOOP or similar to Flat Stack the materials one on top of the other and ecah slightly forward of the prior color. Pinch the fly around the hook shank to get the "head" shape e.g flatten the sides

  6. One of my friends has "retired" from fly tying. I have a bunch of furs and feathers and some tying tools/threads/bobbins etc (no vise or hooks) that I will give away to a younger newbie flytier. If you know a kid who is getting into fly tying and woho would want this stuff, send me a PM with details. Must take a one lot!

  7. Good replies. Also, bear in mind this is winter fishing, verrryyyy cooold ;mornCoffee: water so the fish are more lethargic and not as likely to chase a fly, they may follow it along for a while but I think they are more likely to hang around their favorite rock. Streamer fishing in summer temperatures is very different than winter presentations. Slow and deep seems to work best for me in winter conditions, and I will often pull in and release 6-8 inches of line just to get the fly pulsating and I often do several mends as the swing develops, again to keep the fly deep(er).
