  1. My dad lives in Calgary, and I'm coming to visit him July 7-21. I am not that good at fly fishing but I would like to catch a few new species while I'm up there. Where are a few good places for novices like myself and my father to get into some good fish. I have been thinking to hit up wedge pond because catching a grayling would be awesome to me. But I also have been wanting to catch my first pike, or bull trout. I am not asking to give away your favorite spots, just for you to tell me what new fish give me the biggest chance of hooking up?
  2. I would like to take a trip to wedge pond sometime in July. I have read that Chironomids are the ticket, but what specific patterns? Also is their any potential for dry fly action in July or just the Chironomids.
  3. Where would a good place to camp be where one could do a little fishing near the campsite? I am not what you would call a skilled fly fisherman but I am decent so the fishing would have to be relatively easy by you guy's standards. I do not care about species, just want a good place to relax and maybe catch a few with my family. Also, would it be worthwhile to take a guided trip on the bow anywhere from july 7-21? Is the river productive then or would my time be better spent fishing other places? THanks for the input
  4. I went to seward last summer and hit the kenai. it is awesome
  5. Maybe my favorite warmwater catch of all is the elusive rio grande perch. It is a relative of the peacock bass and though it does not get huge, it is a great fighter and really pretty. I hope you have some luck!
  6. Where will you be in Houston? There is great bayou fishing near the city if you don't want to travel far. I have caught alligator gar, largemouth, channel cats, blue cats, bowfin (my personal favorite), carp, bluegill, crappie, and buffalo on the fly all within 5 minutes from my house. Carp are some of the hardest fighting fish I have ever encountered and they can often be found cruising or tailing in clear water which makes for some insane sight casting. Better bring a minimum 6 weight for those bruisers, and be prepared to see your backing, I have fought a 5 pound carp on an 8 weight for over 30 minutes. Here are a few pictures of some city fish. http://www.texaskayakfisherman.com/forum/v...ic.php?p=866887 http://www.texaskayakfisherman.com/forum/v...ghlight=#815856 Texas has a huge variety of fly fishing challenges and their is something for everyone here, from redfish in the flats, to smallies in the pristine devils river, to huge LMBs in lake fork. The Guadalupe river in the hill country was even rated one of the top 100 trout streams in America! Here are some cool websites about fly fishing in texas http://www.flyfisherman.com/south/sstexas/ http://www.expedition-outfitters.net/index.html PM me if you want more info or anything, I love the whole warmwater fly fishing thing and would be happy to give you some tips. I apologize for the rant, I just love texas fly fishing!
  7. With the blue ribbon bow so close, I was wondering if fly fishing was a major pastime for teens in Calgary. In Houston, there were probably 3 people in the city who fly fished, so I was just curious if it is different here. thanks for the feedback
  8. Nice axiom. How are you liking it?
  9. What is the best fully-machined, center drag, reasonably lightweight, mid or large arbor fly reel near 100 dollars? Does such a reel exist??? I'd appreciate some recommendations.
  10. What is the rod and reel in that picture?
  11. I want to buy the best hands-down medium-fast or fast action rod. I do not care if it is made in the orient as long as the quality is good and I don't want to spend over $450. So far I am considering... Redington CPS- 299 Albright A-5- 250 Sage Fli- 320 Sage Smallmouth- 350 Loomis Streamdance Metalius- 375 These are just a few that I have heard good things about, I am open to ideas though. I'm not a big fan of TFO though, I have cast almost all their rods and they feel clumsy and hinged to me. Maybe its just my casting style. Let me know what yall think.
  12. Has anybody cast a Redington CPS? I was thinking about getting a 6 wt but wanted to get some feedback first. Also, do you think I should get the 6 wt with fighting butt or without.
  13. My dad has bought cases of those for my backyard here in Texas. I don't see what stops them from just going to other peoples yards.
  14. Do you guys know of any places near calgary to catch smallmouths?
  15. What 2 rod weights/ lengths would you guys recommend that would allow me to handle the widest array of fishing situations that western canada has to offer?
  16. Probably wanted the opinions of both the pros and recreational fishermen there, Hawgstoppah...
  17. I am moving to Calgary from Houston this summer though.
  18. I am looking to take a guided float trip on the bow this summer to get acquainted with the river and was wondering what guide service I should use. I was hoping to have fishing gear provided for me. I want a guide that can educate me on how to fish the bow on my own. Any advice?

  20. I'm moving to Calgary this summer after living all of my life in Houston and I am looking for some tips on fishing in the area or trout fishing in general. I usually fly fish for bass, crappie, redfish etc. and have never fished for trout.
