Try getting your hands on the "Friends of the Bull Trout Conference Proceedings" from Canmore 1999. There is more info relating to bull trout than you can comprehend. Kerry Brewin and Mike Monita put the technical papers together so I believe the TU office will have a copy. It has a grey cover with a handsome fellow on the front (the bull trout that is) the other mug is mine. Good luck on your project.

Anyone Using An 8-weight On The Bow?
wingshooter replied to Cutman's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
Get a 10 footer you won't regret it. Eight weights are good for pacific salmon (coho and sockeye) steelhead and atlantic salmon. Now that just opened up a few more places to use a eight weight.....Cost benefit looking better? -
The most informative show on WFN was Fishing with Oliver Edwards this guy was king on getting inside the trouts head. The level of detail was great however I think it is not on anymore. But he has some stuff on youtube. As for Canadain shows Daryll Kronzy is the biggest jerk going he treats his guides like slaves and eats everything he catches. Sportfishing Bc is one of my favs but he is also stuck in a rut near a Kamloops trout lake. Nice catch goes to some great places but I think her director smokes too much weed as the artsy side comes out too much. Mark Krupa is great if he stays away from the vodka. It can make a long winter bareable. I can't wait for a realityTV show about guides in Alberta beating the crap out of each other for a place to dredge san juans on the bow and maybe some oar jousting at the launch...........

I also think guides should be licensed and bonded and have to meet all health/safety and environmental guidelines. Just like any other industry. Like if they fish a small stream with native cutthroats they should have to do an impact assessment of their actions on a threatened species and if they are wadding they should have certified Whirling Disease free clients and if they have visited any foreign fisheries in the last year with rock snot, killer snails and lampreys they should not fish for 3 years. Just a thought but things can be taken a bit too far if it was left up to the burocrats........

Before calling your MLA and sending out some letters, a little research turned up some interesting reading. For reference check on Table 2 on page 24 under large permanent streams. http://www.srd.gov.ab.ca/forests/pdf/Sundr...les-Aug2009.pdf Unfortunately the law is written to clarify the rules the logging companies must follow therefore there is little that can be done unless the operating ground rules were to reflect a 500 m buffer on all large perms. Which Red Deer, Calgary and Edmonton would all have to moved I don't think that will happen anytime soon. I hate to see stream and river encroachment as much as anybody just look @ the new development on Ghost Res. Ouch that is an eye sore. Approved by all levels of government including DFO.

In no posts did I defend the Deschutes as being the best river in the world all I said was the returns this year were great and that there was great dryfly fishing. It is a must fish river this year for sure. The river is called the White River that has the water clouded up this fall and I would concure there is some truely remarkable desert scenery. Go fishing! Relax!
-
Ok fine by me. One could catch 10 in a day if you cover enough water but I think one a day is average. I have landed 8 a day in BC for winter runs but that day was an out standing day of angling. The Deschutes has a longer window of dryfly fishing for steelies than any BC river. Hope you guys can get fishing down there to get some great action.

Hawgstoppa, Not to be an arse but my math is just fine with $60 for annual licence, $60 for Steelhead Stamp, $30 for nontidal salmon (which you need when fishing for steelhead in a river with salmon in it)7 days@ $40 a day for Class 1Waters = $430 dollar Canadian. That is lots of beer and anther guided day on the river. I have fish the Skeena for years I know it when I retun my butt hurts for the BC Government. I was told once that size doesn't matter?

BC does have it's stars but this area is good. I am not aware of any river in BC with returns of 500,000 summer run steelhead????? In Oregon they locally call them "redsides" and the columbia rivers are called "red bands". BC you pay $40 buck a day on top of over $180 for even a chance to catch a steelhead. So a week of licence would run you $400 bucks!!!!!
-
For those of you with more time than money a great trip to go on is to the Deschutes River in Oregon. This year they are having record returns of steelhead in the Columbia basin. You may even catch a few native redside rainbows. Watch the movie call the "Drift" to get your mojo going. It is a place to visit for any hardcore angler. It is cheap too I think a yearly is only 50 bucks and it is the same drive as it is to BC. Pm me if you want more deatils this fall will be off the hook! I am not a guide nor do I want to be just thought I would share a great destination.

Trolling Electric Motors
wingshooter replied to Saltamontes's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
Costco has a Minn Kota Traxxis Transom mount motors on for $399 which is a great deal as they are $394 on the company website which is in US funds. I picked up a deep cycle @ Napa for $169 as they were also on special. I have a 15 foot zodiac and it pushed it in heavy wind and is very efficient as it has a digital maximizer and a built in battery test light. There is nothing more frustrating than running out of juice when the wind picks up and you are on the other side of the lake. Good angling! -
Yes I was flyfishing in two segments and yes we did catch a 23 inch rainbow and a 21 brown on the fly. The brown was on a size 16 sparkle dun on 6 X tippet and yes it was a 60 foot cast. I am a fisherman not a snob! I don't allow snobs in the boat.

I picked up a new rig this spring and I love it and I think my fishing buddies do too. I feel comfortable taking it out on a big lake as it is very stable. In the river it rows awesome and takes very little water 6 inches on plane. A little under powered with more than 3 guys and all their gear. But no battery to contend with and no center consol to get in the way. Aluminum floor is great too. Rowing frame is a little bit of a pain on a lake but it comes out with 4 straps. It only take 15 minutes to blow up and put the floor in. It will go 45- 50 km going down stream and 30 km upstream. If you are a thrill seaker get a huge gas eating noisey one which holds more beer (like the ones on the lower red). If you want to catch fish go light.

The money grubbers and developers have set their sights on development around the Dickson Dam. Water managers will not be able to maintain summer flows to satisfy flood concerns and downstream water supply, because the money grubbers in their $80,000 ski boats can't use them on the weekend. Water managers will have to dump water all summer long to save the dam from bursting. Look forward to fishing dirt all summer now. Money talks and (so do taxes). Visit My Website I hope no Calgary flyfishers buy a lot.

Had several bears in or near camp and tried bangers to scare them off, they laughed and continued in our direction......(Plan B ) shotgun slug shot into bank near bear (10 feet to the right)..........bear jumps out of it skin trying to get the heck out of there on all attempts .....end of experiment. Safe for both bear and operator. I hope the Feds don't ban lead for slug guns near a watercourse?? The best defence is keep alert in the bush.

I am with Garlic on this one... for one week or two out of the year ice fishermen fish these lakes. Sure they take a few muddy tastin slabs out of the lake (I know because I tried eating one once). If you added up all the belly up fish from the light tippet club during the summer or the warm water fisherman I am sure it wouldn't even be close. I know for sure the Osprey eat good at Beaver because I have seen newbe flyfishers fight a fish to death just to add it to their tally card.Let's try enforcing the ones we have before making up some new ones. We all know the RAP line if we see infractions.
-
If it does open up this week expect brown dirty tanic acid stained water from surface runoff. Shaded areas will have huge ice shelfs which are not recommended to walk near. This late spring will be very frutrating for the fishing deprived here in west central region.

It is a little early yet wait for the April 1 Opener to hit the best sections. Floating it can be tricky with low water as there are some rock outcrops near the train tressel. Please use caution on edge ice also. www.kureoutdoors.com

Which Is Your Favorite Reel Maker?
wingshooter replied to NormanMcLean's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
Islander is the best there is and Teton is a close second. Both have landed some big fish for me in the past. www.kureoutdoors.com -
I agree with Don. In the commercial sense if an oil company wants to cross your land you should and are compensated for the inconvinence and mitigated. If an oil company puts a facilty lease or pipeline on crown land they compensate the Crwon therefore the province of Alberta and it's people (Royalities). When have guides in the fishing industry ever put their money where their mouth was and compensate the people and sportsmen of Alberta........Never! End of story. As for the Whirling disease thing I would think the guide would take it upon themselves and make sure disease does not have an effect on their livelyhood. If I do recall the Jensens were in New Zealand....... what about all the "rock snot" they brought back to the Red Deer and the Ram????? It is possible if they don't take it upon themselves just a thought.

Back before bull trout got the royal pardon from King Ralph I have heard stories of anglers (if we can call them that) throwing bull trout in the bush because they like catching cutthroats and people killing walleye just for their cheeks. This made me sick. But if people don't have respect for the resource and feel they know what is best for the whole and start this waste soon the masses think it is ok. People a still throw ling on to the ice because they are ugly; little do they know they are delicious. If I see anybody doing this I have the mind to assault them with the frozen carcass. Whitefish are also a maligned species and I don't know why? I have heard knowledgeable fly fishers say they hated whitefish or "rocky mountain suckers". This too gets my dander up, they are a part of an ecosystem that we have changed so much in 100 years and we should respect them for their will to survive. I still hear the old-timers say back then you could catch a fish every cast well if you fish the right location now this still holds true even after their poor management practices. In Montana the limit on Whitefish is 100 can you believe that? That tells me that the law makers find them to be a lesser species that compete for trout food. This mentality has got to change.
