So I found this truly big Bull trout on the weekend. I did my usual and put on my favourite big minnow like streamer. 3rd cast I hooked him, and after 3 big head shakes showing me a big flash of red gills, the hook sadly came out and it was over. Arghhh. I realized that firstly the hook was sharp but not razor sharp and secondly that I probably should have set the hook a bit harder? Do bulls have abnormaly hard mouths or is it the hook size that necessitates a harder hookset to get good connection? Also, once stung, the big brute just pressed down on the bottom of the run and would not even give me the time of day. I put every remaining streamer, wooly bugger, giant stone, everything past him, right in front of his nose, even rested him for over 30 mins. Any tips on how to get these guys interested again after they may have felt a hook and escaped? Oh yeah, it was in BC and there is a Single Barbless, that means no doubling up with two strreamers to create the chase impression.

Had these two prints on the hood of my GMC Safari van this weekend whilst camped up High in the hills between Invermere and Cranbrook. Now I dont really think a human couldve made them unless they were trying too do so on purpose. Prints are about the size of my hand as if it were in a Tiger Style ninja kung fu grip, wtf? (knuckles bent but not full fist). So anybody out there able to identify if these may have been an animal? looks to be both the same hand or paw. And as though something went up with the front paw on the hood to look in the front window. As Bubbles would say, "might be samshqwuatch!"

Best Concert You Ever Saw????

1991 went to Western Washington Universtiy in Bellingham to see Mudhoney play. After the opening act when Mudhoney was supposed to come out, these three other dudes roll onto stage. One of them is like 8 feet tall and we realized that Nirvana had shown up just for fun. They played for 45 mins or so and then destroyed every istrument on the stage, It was friggen insane. Keep in mind this was just as Teen spirit had come out and they were blowing up big time. after the mess was cleaned up, Mudhoney came out for an entire set. The whole thing left this late teenager awestruck and only cost $4. ACDC second row at GM place was quite crazy as well. NOFX and Helmet at Commodore Ballroom was intense. Bringing back some good memories yet frustrating cause the memories are quite faded at the same time Beastie Boys, Chilli Peppers, Fishbone, Supersucker, Reverend Horton Heat, Rocket from the Crypt. Man those was some fun times. -

Interesting information, Thanks for sharing! -
Dude, you nailed it. I live for this situation on the Bow. The last time it happened to me in late may or June, I got a real monster in the exact fashion you describe. after stopping the intial run just into the backing, I dropped my rod to the side and started my pressure pull to get her to come back to shore. The line went slack and I thought he snapped the leader. I got my line in only to notice she straightened the hook on my cdc caddis right out. Heartbroken, I took a couple breaths to lose the butterflies, looked around, realized I did everything I could to turn her to avoid 300 yards of running at the big bend of rapids and realized Ill just have to catch her another night. Got to love it! Great post Toolman.

Cougar Spotted In Fish Creek Provincial Park Jul, 24 2007 - 1:10 PM CALGARY/AM770CHQR - Wildlife officials are warning people in Fish Creek Provincial Park to be vigilant, because of cougar sightings over the last few days. The animal hasn't show any aggression toward people though. Park Conservation and Fish and Wildlife officers are monitoring the situation, and will try to capture the cougar if they can. But snagging a cougar isn't easy because they're wary and can easily get away. Officials are recommending people avoid visiting the park at dawn or dusk, make lots of noise, keep your pets leashed, and carry a stick or pepper spray as a deterrent. If you encounter a cougar, shout and be aggressive, throw rocks or fight back, and raise your arms in the air to appear as big as possible. I figured Id pass along this warning to Maxwell cause I know hes got a problem with all those predatory older females:), but then I realized this was real when I heard it on CBC. Keep your wits about yah boys and girls

Had a chance to fish down in Fernie this weekend. Spent Saturday driving forever in search of a fabled tributary of the elk. There were quite a few vehicles at each of the limited access points. Funny enough, even with BC's F'd Up licencing practices, most of the cars were Albertan with one Washington plate. Any way, went way up high in the system and being alone and doing some serious bushwacking, I was a bit nervous and didnt fish as much as I would have liked. good water was few adn far between and I didnt stir a single fish. Ah well. I had a blast just for the adventure of it, and will return when water levels drop in Aug/september. Did see this guy buzz by my head and it reminded me of beetles Ive seen in Costa Rica and Panama. Must be the Heat! Sunday I fished the Elk River. Visability cleared up after the dirty waters I saw on the Elk Saturday evening, the result of a torrential rain that they had recieved on Friday night. Anyway, did quite a hike in the heat and found some nice bouldery runs that had playfull trout in front and behind almost every big stone, and they seemed to like stoneflys, Go figure! Then another beautiful bend upstream with some amazing structure that was a blast to fish in. There are some nice Cutties in that river! Sorry for the limited pics. Didnt have my photographer along Cheers.

great pics, Last time I was there on July 6th, It was soo stinking hot on the Friday that I would have loved to have brought a snorkel and mask. Those pictures really give a neat view into a world we drag fish out of but rarely get to gaze into. Thanks for sharing.

There may be a few guys, Toolman and Maxwell come to mind, who could get away with it. Claiming a temporary place of residence! -

Crocs all the way, I got a set of knockoffs for $4.99 at superstore lastyear. They are the ultimate summer mountian river wading shoe. I find they are grippy too. I splurged on the 4X4 or offroad moeel but cant really tell the difference except that the $45 new pair gave me blisters.

An article is a great idea and I think it could benefit us all. Add in there in addition to avoiding mortality, how to avoid damaging the fish. This weekend I got a little wierded out when probably 70% of the fish I caught were fuggered up in some way or another. Some really badly. We are almost going to have to rename the stream Deadstone - Sad.

Which Species Of Trout Fights The Hardest?
Carlodabroads replied to birchy's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
No question, Steelhead(Rainbows). Its like being on a Bull (Male Cow not trout). If you can hang on for the first 8 seconds, you have increased your odds dramatically of landing one. -
