Casting A Two Or More Fly Nymphing Rig
mkm replied to chiasson's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Coming from a guy who tangles lots I have been tought one thing...if you tangle always tell yourself first "its never as bad as it looks". This seems to make taking the tangle out easy. Otherwise I get frustrated and this leads to more tangles. Good luck, you may see me on the river sometime...I'm the one talking to myself while taking the tangle out! Mike -
Hey Beedhead, It was awesome running into you on saturday. The fly your buddy gave me caught a fish right after you guys moved on. You guys were right...the walk back along the tracks was miserable. MKM

Need Advice On A Rod/reel Combo
mkm replied to bigalcal's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Just bought the 5wt TFO Axiom yesterday. Spent the day on the bow with it and loved it. Its a fast action rod which forces me to work on my technique. By the end of the day I was casting a good 20 feet of line more then with my old cheap TFO...that doesn't probably say much about my casting! The rod responds unbelievably to doube hauling and shoots line really fast. Bought it at Russell Sports...10% off all rods right now! To make it even sweater I had the best day i have ever had on the bow...9 fish - 7 to hand - 5 over 20" - biggest was a gorgous 22" brown. I thought no one that has fished with me would believe it so I have pics of a 4 of the fish over 20". I'll try posting when I get my pics loaded. mkm -
Thanks for the heads up. I was going to head down on my own tomorrow and explore but it doesn't sound worth it. Guess I had better find another spot. Mike

Hey all, I was just wondering if anyone knows how open the river is past policemans flats? Thanks

I fished a few of the flies from Icky last year and they were comparable to the ones I usually buy for tripple the cost. One of the guys I fish with also uses them and seems to have great luck with them on all waters. I am about to restock my box for the season and wouldn't consider anything but icky...good selection, great price, quick delivery. mkm

I am overwhelmed by the 4 pages of replies I found when I logged on today. It truely sucks that this thread went this way but on a positive note I am happy some people, other then the regular posters, got involved to put in their two cents. This site sometimes seems to only be for a limited number of members who know "the secret spot" rather than the 1275 members that make it worthwhile for companies to pay for advertising on it. But back to the real topic. As I was the one who made the initial post I think it is only fair that I do inform you guys that the matter has been resolved. Unfortunitely, it took the attention of posting to gain resolution but ultimately the guide did man up and apologized...also offering a free trip. I hope my buddies and I can take him up on it however I already called in one favor to get the day off for a guided fishing trip and its unlikely that I will be able to call in another favor any time soon to get out for a full day on the Bow. Thanks for all your posts and I hope we can all get back to fishing again. Gotta run out for some advil after reading all the virtual beatings that took place. mkm

On last friday myself and another member were supposed to do a walk n wade with a private guide but to our disappointment he never showed. Having taken the day off and really anticipating a great day we both decided to sit and wait an hour just in case the guide had slept in. However, after numerous ignored phone calls/messages we finally assumed we had been stood up and headed to the river for what turned out to be a poor fishing day for us. The sad part of this story is that (1) we both took the day off, (2) had emailed confirmation of the date and time, (3) the guide never gave us a heads up that he couldn't make it, (4) still to this day he has not responded to multiple phone calls or emails. I'm not out to post names or muddy reputations but what do you guys think the best way to deal with this situation is? Thanks, mkm

Headed out with PaleMorningDunce to Livingstone on Sunday. When we arrived it was freakin cold and the trout must have been in shock because they refused to move. We came across a pool which was holding 30+ trout (lots of large white fish and the rest were big cutts). Once the sun came out we began catching however it wasn't until around 1:30pm when the fish hit the surface. Most fish were caught on the ant or beatle but a stomach pump sample showed they were feeding on tiny green nymphs. The day was okay but it seems like the cold nights are really starting to slow the fishing down. Even at 5pm I struggled to hold a fish in the water for 30 seconds. Highlight of the day was having a big bull chase any cutt we had on the line (no luck hooking the bull with a streamer set-up). Here's one decent cutt from the day. mkm

What type of camera are you using? thanks, mkm

Tgo and I got out for one final trip to our favorite summer time trib. We decided to tough it out and parked our cars at two access points and hiked/fished the 15km between. Waders were just extra weight so we opted to freeze our arses off in the early morning. Here's a some pics of the trip. mkm

Gravelman, I witnessed the same thing four weeks ago on the highwood. I wasn't sure about the rules governing this type of behavior and totally forgot about the incident until you mentioned it now. If you do get somewhere with this let me know because I still remember a fairly good description of the idiots and their truck. Keep us posted. mkm

Pale Morning Dunce was kind enough to take myself and Tgo on a float last weekend. The day started slow but picked up late afternoon and into the evening. We flaoted from McKinnons to Carsland and were joined but what seemed to be tons of other boats. Lots of fish were lost but a our fair share of healthy rainbows were caught...almost all were 17-18". Here are some pics of the day.

Finally broke down yesterday and bought a new reel from wholesale. The service was exceptional and the guy helping me seemed more excited about the Greys reel I bought then I was. With my new reel I decided to hit the bow and try her out. Third cast...BAM...massive rainbow takes to the air and runs me down the bank before self releasing. I decided to head further down the bank and fish my way back up. As soon as i hit the water I found myself amoungst massive numbers of rising fish - the BWO hatch was on. Stupid me left all my BWO patterns at home so I used a small adams which seemed to work well. As the risers slowed I changed up to a hopper-dropper combo. The first hole I came upon proved worthwhile as I hooked into a wicked fighting brown. Trying to land the fish proved to be quit the task but eventually I netted it...taped at a hair short of 22''. Maybe it was the new reel or just good timing.

2 years ago I went on a horseback trip along the skyline trial just outside of jasper. About 15 minutes into the trip we came across a small lake which was absolutely hopping with good sized trout. I still dream about wetting my line in the lake and will have to make a trip up some time soon. It could easily be fished from shore but a belly boat would be amazing. I will see if i can track down the lake's name. Good luck. Mike

My buddy and I were wanting to float the Bow some time and was wondering if any of you knew of the best price/company out there. I have only done it once before and the experience is what got me hooked on fly-fishing. Any help would be greatly apprechiated. Mike

Lessons for the better half are a great investment. I even took a casting lesson with my girlfriend last year for our 2 year anniversary. Went through Tyson at Troutfitters and he was able to get her casting in no time. We only fish together occasionally but I try to make those trips to small ponds so she doesn't get frustrated with having to manage the drifting line. The first fish she caught on a dry fly was quite the show...she nearly dropped the rod in excitement! Quick question: my gf has miss placed her license. Is there any way to get it replaced? mkm
