  1. You can treat piees of fresh hide with pickling salt as well but scrap as much of the fat off the hide as possible to help the curing process.

As for hair from various parts of the animal this link should help

    http://globalflyfisher.com/staff/helm/selecting/chart.html

Hi, This website is very helpful, it gives me a good idea where and what the hair is used when it comes to fly tying... It takes very little deer, moose ect to tie a fly.

I looked at the pheasant it can be sold in sections I bought half of one last weekend for $15.00 there's more then enough for fly tying for one person to tie.

There's grades of feathers, # 1, #2, #3 ect. Some more expensive than others depending on qulity of finished product the fly.

My question to organic, is the fur better if it's raised on organic leaves, twigs, than not.. like us we are what we eat!

Thank-you for answering my questions. These are only my thoughts I wanted to ask someone, this is a good place to ask.

  2. any hair will work from the deer family from most places on the body. that being said, the really short stuff from the legs and ears wont be of much help.

moose, elk, white tail and mule are the most popular. caribou and antelope tend to be rather fragile.

mane, neck, back, rump, shoulder, belly will all work just fine. i doubt it is organic, but you can purchase from any of the fly supply shops. sorry, i have never bothered to ask superfly where they get their deer from. note to self, ask at sportsman show... maybe that is where all the road kill goes... hummm

if you have a hunter friend, make sure the hide is fleshed well and either dried/salted/boraxed or professionally tanned.

to get rid of bugs, i just nuke it in the microwave for 15 sec. moth balls dont always work and it stinks. keep in a cool dark place for all furs

as for dying, unless you have expreience with picric, i'd stay away from it. it is very volitile and nasty to work with.

i buy all my dyed stuff. i dont want the hassle or the work.

    Hi,

Thank-you Lady Strange for your valuable information.. What I've seen in some of the shops that sell moose hair, deer hair, ect it's very affordable. As for dying it Seems alot of messy work to go that route.

It's not important to me where the fur comes from if it's organic or not, I thought I would ask that question, I wondered if farms raised these animals for the pelt to be sold. like dairy farms.

  3. as an added question. I may be able to get some hair from some hunters....how would you treat it to get rid of the bugs? also how can you die the hairs?

Hi, Treat it for bugs.. I've been told to use moth balls put the hair in a bag with the moth balls leave it for few weeks...

    Or....

Use bleach Borax bleach soak it dry it than it's ok.. Someone helped me with that at Fish Tails,

  4. Hi, I've seen this used at Wholesale sports. two guys were farting around with them, to me it looked easy.. Some pro fisher guy standing besides me said oh crap.. that no damn good!!! So i never got one I don't know.. I've seen other shows with someone using them the turn out looks good... I'm going to learn the old fashion way..

  5. oh god, that's even worse!!

i dont think i have ever heard any guy say to any woman, 'keep your hands off my willie'

Hi Lady Strange.. I have heard a guy say keep your hands off my willy... He never said that to me.. but I've heard it.... It was pretty funny!!!!!

  6. Hello all. I have some spare time up here in Fort McMurray, (Go figure), so I decided to put this little compilation together as a way to say thanks to all the people here that make this site possible, and those that contribute making this site a great place to hang out.

I stole the pictures from posts here, so I hope nobody minds. If anyone does mind, let me know and I'll take it off of Youtube.

Sorry to those I missed, but I did the best I could to get everyone. If I missed anyone, try to post some pictures of you holding big fish and you can star in the next one.

    Thanks everyone.

Click here if the movie does not play.

Hi, Wow! That was great, Man there's alot of talent here.

  7. Hi FisherWoman

Like mentioned above Fly Angler's Online has a great Beginner site. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytying/beginners/

The author works you through a bunch of great lessons.

Hipwader (Canadian FF Site) also has a really good online flytying course. http://hipwader.com/flyfishing/oreillys-fl...y-tying-course/

Here is some Hook and Hackle (Calgary) info. I've used this stuff to help beginners before. http://hookandhackleclub.tripod.com/btying.html (the site has pop-ups)

Their are also some videos on http://www.hook.tv/

and you can download the PBS series "Anglers Art" Online ( http://kwsu.org/Offers/OMNFlyTying.aspx ). Its a great series and you can get over 50 of the half-hour shows for free!!! These are the program descriptions.

And You tube has some tying videos, along with the rest of the junk on there.

NOTHING beats a good hands on course, though.

    Cheers

Hi Harps, Thank-you for your info.. I've seen & taped that show, Every Sat mornings.

    Cherrio..

  8. I echo what rickr said. Take a course. You will learn way faster and probably enjoy it a lot more. Tyson at troutfitters does a really good job.

Hi I signed up for a fly tying class late summer this year at Troutfittlers , I was put on a waiting list.. Never heard back or when I called to see when the classes would start.. no news. I signed up at Fish Tails, I'm going on the other side of the city to learn how to make my own flies..

I know I'll enjoy making my own flies..

  9. So I feel like a slight idiot here...I have a 4 piece tfo but after fishing the other night I found the two end pieces out the four to be stuck together. They wont seperate, its realy odd its not like they are pushed together too far, they just wont budge. So anyone have a suggestion to try to get them apart? I havent realy messed around with it too much but some input would be great. Thanks.

Hi, I do this method, My arms are not very strong getting my rod apart, but this way works everytime for me...

Squat down a little bit, put your rod behind your knees squat down a little more, balance your rod behind your knees, make sure the joined section of your rod is in the middle of your legs if you are squating down enough your legs can help your arms pulling your rod apart., have fun.

  10. This is my first poll so hope it works out. Just curious what percentage of people pick up trash when they head out fishing say in the past 6 months. I didn't myself until recently when I started noticing more and more trash showing up.

    Thanks for participating!

Hi, I always do, most of the times I take a small gold mine home with all the beer bottles .. $$$ ching, ching, ching...$ 25.00 Buck-a-roos later.

Other than that it's sad to see what other fisherman/women leave behind instead of putting it back in the pockets.

  11. try using the photo alteration program that came with your digital camera or photo shop and decrease the size of the photo. i have a resize function that lets me use either by pixel, bites or inches.

i just call them mini pictures and stick them in a separate photo file

Hmm, ok. I'll try that ... Thanks. ladystrange.

  12. Go to MY CONTROLS top right then go to Edit Avatar Settings and download from there :D

HI, Ok I tried that .

But. it seems that my pictures are larger than 175 pixels by 125 pixels in size mine are more like in the 2 thousand size, how would I reduce to the size that's needed..my wondering mine wants to know..

    Thanks

  13. It would actually be Libel, not slander..

and, the plaintiff would have to prove that what the defendant said was not true..

Libel, slander, and defamation attorneys help victims of libel (typically defined as a false and defamatory written communication) and slander (a false and defamatory spoken communication). Because instances of libel or slander – beyond simply damaging a person’s reputation – can demonstrate real financial injury, libel and slander attorneys help people recover compensation directly resulting from the libel, slander, or defamation. They can sometimes recover punitive or exemplary damages. Good libel and slander attorneys will not accept a libel or slander case unless the facts are clear, the damages can be proven, and the proposed defendant has resources substantial enough to make collection on a judgment likely. Attorneys usually require some payment in advance, rarely working on a pure contingent fee basis.

  14. On last friday myself and another member were supposed to do a walk n wade with a private guide but to our disappointment he never showed. Having taken the day off and really anticipating a great day we both decided to sit and wait an hour just in case the guide had slept in. However, after numerous ignored phone calls/messages we finally assumed we had been stood up and headed to the river for what turned out to be a poor fishing day for us. The sad part of this story is that (1) we both took the day off, (2) had emailed confirmation of the date and time, (3) the guide never gave us a heads up that he couldn't make it, (4) still to this day he has not responded to multiple phone calls or emails. I'm not out to post names or muddy reputations but what do you guys think the best way to deal with this situation is?

    Thanks,

    mkm

Hi, Ya I know how that feels, that happend to me too.If you say anything to anyone with that persons name, phone number, ect, he / she can charge you, I say charge you with- SLANDER yes that's right ..Whatever you do don't post it here on this site. Freindly advice from me.

  15. In another thread Lynn mentioned that she goes fishing with her labrador. I'm interested in knowing who here fishes with their dog.

Where do you take the dog fishing?

Have you found it difficult to control/train the animal to behave properly?

It sounds like a great way to get the dog out of doors but is it generally practical?

Hi, I've taken my little dog fishing with me, he loved it, me well besides him getting tangled up in my line, hook, ect, than both of us were not enjoying ourselves, grr. I'll stick with us going out running than fishing.
