  1. I guess I could have mentioned the public safety side of it... I posted that on the Flyangers.ca forum. If it goes up... things will burn fast.
  2. Talk to Chris Dore on Sexyloops. He's one of NZ's top guides... and if you have the time this weekend, come on down south for a beer with Paul Arden and the rest of us! Cheers,
  3. Good and bad, eh. The fish need the break from the heat, we need a break from the concrete. The area is nice when there is nobody around... hopefully no fires get started and it is nice when we are allowed back in. It will be crowded north of Calgary!!
  4. http://www.albertafirebans.ca/ Better make different plans, the Oldman, Livingstone, and Castle are now OFF-LIMITS. Areas 1,2,&3 are Chain Lakes South. Hope nobody left campers up there. I hear Sullivan Lake is nice this time of year...
  5. Gurglers on top, in all sorts of colours. (Jack Gartside has them on his website http://www.jackgartside.com/step_gurgler.htm ) Also try his Bass Bug Clousers and buggers work great for sub-surface. Crayfish area a great pattern (search Steve May's full motion Cray, its a great pattern). Also try www.flyangersonline.com for a great selection of bass flies. You can tie weed gaurds on almost anything too. Pound and skip the fly over the lilly pads and vary the retrieves from fast to slow and even to erratic. Bass will also take nymphs presented just like you would for trout. Approach quiet, stay out of sight, and target areas where the fish may hide to ambush prey. Cheers,
  6. Don't know if this has been posted in the past week, but it is an excellent law. We should start a petition to get something like this in Alberta!!!
  7. From Calgary Herald 19 July 2007 I like this: No cause for Alberta Environment to be concerned... just a poison stew of pesticides, hydrocarbons, carcinagenics, fecal waste, and other nasty chemicals. Its all from storm sewers so who cares!?! MissinTheBow, maybe I'll avoid this whole thing ... I'm off to Vancouver for court next week. Cheers,
  8. 2 good shops in the Crowsnest Pass Crowsnest Angler on Highway 3 in Blairmore and the Crowsnest Cafe & Fly shop on Hwy 3 in Coleman. Also a shop in Ft Macleod on the way to the Pass and in Lundbreck near the Crowsnest River in the Pass. Just about any water is good once you get to Pincher Creek. PM me if you want some more info, but you really can't go wrong with ant/beetle and grasshopper patterns on most water in the area in August.
  9. Call 1-800-222-6514 (#7378 on a cell phone) That 24hr number will put you through to an enviro emergency line that will send investigators ASAP. The Environment Canada and Alberta Environment staff are trained to properly collect spill evidence to take it to court. They have the training and experiance to pursue charges if they need to be laid. You can still call and report it now. Like MissinTheBow mentioned, we need better control on what goes down the storm drains. Good eye!
  10. I've got a quote for ya... It's great. “… if there is a question of ‘Fish vrs Irrigation’ the fish must go because the settlers here cannot possibly do without irrigation.” . . . . . In reference to Alberta (NWT) fisheries... 1897 memo from Inspector Steele of the MacLeod District to the Inspector of Fisheries for the Northwest Territories. Page 33 of the report below. There is an Excellent chapter written by Kerry Brewin, on Fishery resources in the Castle/Carbondale System in this Report. http://www.cpawscalgary.org/campaigns_cast...urce-report.pdf The history of fisheries management is absolutely amazing stuff.
  11. Hey guys, Thanks for the signatures keep them coming. http://www.petitiononline.com/umpqua07/petition.html Put your name down and where you're from, only about 5 days left!!! Cheers,
  12. Excellent Griz and Cactus!! Its the panic that causes the trouble (or the bang to the head). I have swum with waders too many times, no worries except trying to stand in shallow water. I think I've posted this before: Exploding the Killer Wader Myth Cheers,
  13. Whitefish seem to be very fragile fish... they are the ones that seem to suffer the most stress during sampling and don't handle any exposure to air very well. Like Toolman mentioned they are affected by the heat and like Clarki said, they are often handled rough by anglers because they are an undesirable catch. My bet would be that some nympher was mis-handling them... bad catching, rough hook retreival, and no care on the release. The white fish feed the trout... Treat them good.
  14. Cats do rule... especially those cool gov't cats.

    Wet Wading

But ya gotta get them in the eye or they keep coming at you.

    Wet Wading

No matter how comfy Croc's are... they are still uglier than sin.

    Wet Wading

I've been wet-wading east-slope streams since May. Go with a boot for those freestone streams. I used to do sandals 'till I cut my foot, then sandals and socks/neo and wool... not enough ankle support for slick rocks, now I'm back in my Chotas. Good ankle support, felt (which is the most important!!!!), a couple screws in the very front of the toe for grip when stepping up hill and a couple in the back of the heel as extra slide protection. Suck up the weight and stand in the water if you're to warm. I wade in pants or shorts depending on the time of day and where I'm going. Polypro long underwear are great for leg protection, warm and keep the bugs off. Neo socks or wool... depends on the fit of the boot, both are comfy. Most important.. You don't want to be up the creek and role your ankle, good support boots with felt soles will help prevent that.
  18. come on guys... this needs sig. its coming down to the wire
  19. The dam is letting out lots. Its disappearing at the LNID weir and points between Ft Macleod. Too much taking, not enough water.
  20. More calls will increase funding to the RAP program and officers. Ineffective for that poaching event or not, call the number to show that we need officers.
  21. I can't see a loose hook re-embeding itself deeper in a vital location. Keeping pressure on the fish will keep the hook in one place... and the small nub of a pinched barb. I don't think barbless is to blame... in fact, its generally accepted that barbed hooks cause more tissue damage, due to the barb.
  22. Be on the look out for other means of poaching while you are out... Found in a log on the shore of a river. An effective bait rig that is out of sight for the most part... trout takes bait deep, stays on the line until the poacher is clear to look.
  23. You can call when you get home to a phone. You just need time, location, descriptions, etc. Every call counts, even after the fact. Its not just about catching these idiots, its about showing the gov't that F&W needs funding and we care about the rivers!
  24. Water below the Dam... about 55cms Water at Fort Macleod... under 10cms Well below average. And fluctuating like crazy. Hard for trout to establish in flows like that. Sucks to deal with the heat and water well below what flows should be. Fish info for the river... Fisheries Management Objectives for Rivers within the S. Sask River Basin. . . . . . . . . And here is where the water is going Makes ya feel all warm and fuzzy knowing that the fish don't need the water.
  25. If a fish gets hooked wrong, the point can enter the eye from the back and it fills with blood. I have seen it, especially from those big hook sets. That could also explain the death... mis-handling in this heat to get the beloved hook out. Like monger said, low O2 and high temps... alot of stressed fish will not survive handling and there will be more injuries that cause the fish problems.
