The typical time for Browns is Mid Oct through Nov. The redd in the last thread were in water less than an inch deep and likely wouldn't survive the season. I'm not too familliar with the Bow, but I don't see why they wouldn't attempt to spawn if the termperatures and flows were right. Doc's got it right in regards to the mechanics of spawning, in terms of when the eggs emerge it depends on temperatures. For rainbows it takes 30 days in water temps at 10 deg. Longer if the water is colder. I don't know the degree-days required for Browns, but you can likeliy find out at the Sam Livingston Hatchery.

I find these types of polls really interesting... Take Azerbaijan... 15 votes only 40 for McCain... I know a guy who was working there for an oil company setting up rigs, before the Chinese bought the company. How many of those 15 were from western society? How many Azerbaijanies?? have access to a computer? Same with all the drilling in Nicaragua and oil ops in Venezuela (even though they produce despite US interests). Simmilar thing with Iraq... are the results skewed due to the current occupation... likely, but do they want McCaoin, and long US presence or Obama and a US free world (not excact, but you get my point). I don't think there is any benefit in having flies sorted by weight in that much detail. Like Rusty mentioned, there is more to sinking than weight... how fully the fly is dressed is probably the most important. Plus water conditions are so different (fast/slow flows, depths, wind on line, cross currents etc) that differences in fly weight would be almost negligible.

I'd like to make another quick point... If guides were licenced in Alberta and reported guiding income to the government, maybe they would have a stronger voice to speek out about things like this. Again, if you are concerned, write to SRD or the Alberta auditor general (to request an inquiry into logging or something). Last time I was up there, there were resonable buffers on most of the watercourses.

Trailhead posted while I wasn't paying attention... Revise my message to read: What he said. As it is, buffers shouldn't be set at only a minimum width... they should be planned to prevent runoff from reaching the watercourse>> bigger buffers for steeper slopes.

I think before everybody has a fit, they find out if the message is legit... I don't think they will remove buffers and SRD will have a hard time trying, even if they want to. There may be big cut block proposed (very early stage), but maybe somebody should call the forestry office to ask what the deal is. I don't think SRD can get away with cutting the buffers (won't happen). It doesn't hurt to send an email to Ted Morton to find out.

My streamers with weight are tied with red thread... red head for deep, black for shallow. Nymphs are sorted similar, its either weight or not, if I need more I use tin shot or sticky weight. No lead on flies or line for me.

Cheeler, I'm going to send it back, its useless to me as it is (I repaired probably about8-10 inches of it overall with UV knotsense). It doesn't shoot as well, which is why I got the line in the first place.

I had a big reply with lots of stuff... then hit the back button on my mouse... To sum it up: I like the line> great shooting, good floating. Noise was't a problem, but one of the best anglers I know said it has put down fish for him. Friction wasn't a problem for me, but I can see it being an issue for city boys with soft hands that go steelheading. Clean the line with the pad as advised by SA. You can preserve the life of your lines by storing them in the freezer, but really you lines die from sun exposure, sharp rocks and big fish, not old age. Birchy, The tip has a smaller diameter so it will go below the surface. Fly lines float by displacing water with their volume first. Fatter lines will float better. Dressing a line will help a line float by "repelling water", cleaning a line will prevent it from cutting through the surface tension. The Sharkskin should "hold more air" around it, and increase the surface area, but the tip will still go down if there is tension. Its the taper of the line that makes a difference in the presentation of the fly. Bcube, I don't know what taper you were using before, but changing that may have made a similar difference. For me, I liked the extra slickness, and the ability to shoot... BUT My line is toast after one season. The coating peeled off parts of the line and got damaged really easily. My SA Nymph line lasted for 4 seasons of harder use, (the same streams and more) and it only has a few cuts in in. It was NOT worth the price to get that extra distance, when I could have practiced casting instead. I think thats about all I said before in less space.

The banks act independently of Harper, and have been working on our finacial system for years and years... more non partisan than most institutions in Canada. People need to stop relating the Conservative Party (CP) with conservatism... its not the same. The CP is a political party that has finacial aspirations that change with the political climate (pressure, leader, party members). Most of my insulting of Harper goes towards that we share the name. I've had many discussions with Clive along these lines and I really love to play the opposite end. Although I do think Harper is a dick (or at least a robot)... based on his past record, including things he has said about health care and the Canadian system. He does not act as a leader, he acts as a bully supressing opinions from within his own party. BTW, I'm as Albertan as they come (except for my views on environment). Alberta voting Conservative isn't a stereotype, but a fact. And I was a PC'er before the merge (even a card carrying campaigning member at that)... I just can't stand the ultra right views of the Reform party (which still form the basis of the CPs).

I'd never vote you out Rick! I voted NDP because they do better here in Lethbridge, and I think the candidate is a smart guy, mostly it was a protest vote. That wikipedia stuff isn't based on the suggested Canadian model... I read somewhere recently that with the tax adjustments, mid class earners would benefit, not much change for lower class (under 40000), and no more than 200 a year for upper class. Replacing income tax with carbon tax... you get penalized for waste not how much you earn (I think it should be a Pollution tax not Carbon tax). The Jaccard model looked at only $50 per tonne, not the $110 above. Of course, I can't find it now, but I'm looking actually I'm going home to get my fly tying stuff to go to the pub. (This is close with actual numbers on how Canadians may be affected).

Its also been demostrated that sustainable agriculture, whether its crops under tree canopies, shrimp in rice patties, or mixed terrace farming can be very cost effective and provide a locally controlled, cheap source of food (and income). Of course to help things we need to stop promoting mass industrial agriculture as the best way, and start encouraging small scale, high diversity operations with less reliance on fuel and ag-chemicals. Just like the cork industry, when you take something away from locals and try to make it cheap and efficient> you ruin that local economy and environment. The push for plastic corks and screw tops on wine bottles has resulted in the loss of cork "forest" and the desertification of parts of Portugal.

We could eat less meat, stop wasting as much as we do (how much do fastfood places throw out?), and stop feeding all the ocean fish to our dam pets! There is no need to feed more fish to pets than what humans consume... we should raise rabbits and ducks for petfood, leave the oceans to recover. And in terms of aquaculture... we only have floating fish farms beacuse of the subsidies and the demand for fast meat. fresh water rainbows raised in dugouts would be a burden to water supply, but with water recycling through hydroponic greenhouses, and return flows through duck supporting marches, we could provide a much more sustainable source of protein (ducks, fish, and veggies). We need money to go into inovation, not subsidies.

You could drive down to Lethbridge... Beer and Fly night. It's quite easy to set up as long as you have a location available. Guito has done a great job in Lethbridge. And, isn't that tying night at the Rose and Crown in Calgary still occuring? (Wasn't it Mr. Botangles?)
