As some of you know, I will be visiting SWAB in the last two weeks of September and the first week of October. I decided to do my flies this year a different way. Normally I would ty everything I think I need and put it all over the boxes. This year I will be tying different boxes for different rivers. But I need some advice on what flies for what rivers. I am speaking of dries, nymphs and may be wets. Streamers are already in a seperate box and more then enough are tied. I am planning on fishing the Crow, Oldman, Livingston and tribs, Highwood and Bow. What flies for what rivers would you recommend and may be some rivers can be fished with the same box? As a bonus, if I have time enough, I was also planning on doing a side trip to the Castle and Carbondale. Same question for those two. Naturally I also have my box with me with proven patterns I use all the time. Rob

I know it has been done by some of the pro-casters on demonstrations. Also overlining your rod will get you some more distance, another trick of the pro-casters.

Sorry guys, no such thing. Drove to Austria by car and split the gas by three. The hotel including half board and fishing license is about CAD 750 per person. As I only drink beer and the occasional wine and the hotel has it's own brewery so beer is not that expensive, the remaining CAD 250 I spent on drinks. I lilke to spoil myself before I do the three weeks in Canada and do my own cooking and cleaning.

Lost Lemon Campground Question
DutchDryfly replied to walker1's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
Rob, So that would place it somewhere around the cursor? I tried to get info on Hiawatha for a lot of years, but was never able to find some. Nothing on the net and by the time I could ask some of the members on FFA it was supposed to be gone. What I like about Lost Lemon, is when I am due for washing, I throw my clothes in the machine and do some fishing until it is finished. Fish are not that big around the campground, but size does not matter to me at all. Thanks for the info. Rob -
Wrong continent Bob. It's Austria and not Australia.

Not for me since I live in Europe. Total about CAD 1000 including travel, food, stay and DRINKS!

Lost Lemon Campground Question

Anybody has an adress for Hiawatha. I heard a lot about it and willing to try it in the Fall. Rob -
Not spying and certainly not British. The only species I fish for in winter is pike, so I know how they look. When he was putting the fish back the shape looked not like pike at all. Also caught a lot of grayling in Scandinavia, so their shape is also familiar. It was a nice sized grayling, which would have never been caught by the pike if it was free swimming. That is why I normally try to put my fish back in shallow water

If it worked last summer I would say keep it like it is. On the other hand if it was my fly I would shorten the front legs a bit.

The first fish (which was caught) was a grayling, not a pike.

Lost Lemon Campground Question
DutchDryfly replied to walker1's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
There are shaded places available at Lost Lemon. Not the ones directly at the Crow, but upon entering the campground take the places on the left. Also nice when it is windy, 2 years ago we had to move the RV to one of the mentioned spots because the RV was lifted once every few minutes. Scary experience in the middle of the night. Will stay there in the fall again. -
Which Species Of Trout Fights The Hardest?
DutchDryfly replied to birchy's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
I know the question was about trout, but seeing Bull's and Brookies are also included I would have to say BIG grayling on moving water. They will fight themselves to death when hooked. -
Flies For Grayling In Bear Pond
DutchDryfly replied to fishinmagician's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
Any small black fly will do for grayling in stillwater. -
I went shopping today with a friend who was in need of a new outfit. After some research I figured we would go for the TFO Finesse to try first. After a few casts he did not want to try another rod, he fell in love with the Finesse. I have a handbuilt rod by Dave Lewis for the small streams and I tell you that if I did not have that one, the store would have sold two Finesses today. I think it is a very nice fishing rod more then a casting canon.

The average size of the fish on the Krimmler Ache lies between 12 and 15 inches. There are some bigger ones to be found, the brown one on day 4 was just shy of 18 inches and the Grayling was 17 inches. We saw even some bigger fish but did not manage to catch them. For numbers, it is possible to fish together and catch 50 fish a day each. For the other rivers and lakes, the average size lies between 15 inch and 30 inch for browns and between 15 and 22 inch for grayling. More difficult to catch and not as many as on the Krimmler Ache. Overall I would say we managed 25 fish a day each. It was a bit more difficult due to the hot weather, we had days with 22-30 degrees Celsius. Rob PS: You can check the website of the hotel at Braurup PPS: From tomorrow on, I expect the same curtasy of photo-reports. Exactly 3 months to go till my visit and can hardly wait.

No video this year, all friends with camera were not able to make it. Almost all the fish were taken on dries, Caddis, Royal Coachman and Klinkhammers. I have never experienced a hatch in Austria, most of the time it is to cold and this year it was to warm. Oddly enough we did not catch anything on nymphs. But in the rare occasion the trout and grayling were not rising ( 2 hours in the whole week ), a sinktip with a muddler did the trick.

Day 4 Lower Krimmler Ache (altitude 1600 meters) Day 5 Finkausee

My annual trip to Austria with some friends was again very nice. We had the best weather we ever had, which meant that the fish were not in the frenzy-mode. But they were definitely bigger and fatter then other years, due to the warm weather which started beginning of May. I let the pictures speak for themselves, but will gladly answer any question you might have. Day 1 on the Hintersee Day 2 on the Salzach Day 3 Upper Krimmler Ache (altitude 1800 meters)

A 12 is not overkill if you are using bunny-streamers 15 inches and longer. Rob
