Lawrence Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 Just wondering how everyone ties in their soft hackles? On my vises last fly that I tied, I tied them in using a loop and it turned out really well. Wish I had a camera to take a pic Quote
Flytyer Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 I just tie in at the tip and then one and half to turns and then tie off; nothing fancy 1 Quote
SilverDoctor Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 I do the same as Flytyer, make sure the concave side of the feather is pointed back. To tie em sparse peel one half of the fibers off the feather before tying it on. Works great too. Quote
admin Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 I tie them in by the tip and double back the feather so that it sweeps back. It goves you a nice result. You can also strip off one side to get a smoother collar. Quote
Lawrence Posted June 3, 2007 Author Posted June 3, 2007 I tried doing that as well but the barbs from the partridge feathers I had were just to long Quote
Flytyer Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 Are you using loose partridge feathers from out of a bag? If you are that is probably the problem, I personally I tried 2 bags and I doubt if I found a dozen and a half good feathers combined from the 2 bags. Quote

It's well worth it to just buy a whole skin then you get your pick. 1 full turn is all you need most times, but there is no such thing as under or over dressing 'em. Sometimes too long is good too. Lawrence Posted June 4, 2007 Author Posted June 4, 2007 The feathers I'm using are from a friend that hunts and he keeps alot of the feathers for his arrows and he just gave me a zip lock bag filled up. So I have a variety of feathers to choose from. I think there are three different feathers that I have from the partridge, tail feather, wing and body. Quote
Flytyer Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 I agree with Harps, get yourself a skin and you'll see where the best feathers are found, for me that is base of the tail , back, neck and throat Quote
Lawrence Posted June 4, 2007 Author Posted June 4, 2007 Good stuff guys thanks! While on the topic of partridge feathers have you guys found any use for the really soft grey feathers (I'm pretty sure they're from the body). They seem to have this really wicked looking sheen to them that looks like it can reflect light off if them Quote

Flytyer Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 You can also tie them in to represent gills or legs on nymphs....almost forgot that one. Quote
Harps Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 Soft grey in colour or soft in texture?? If its the aftershaft, you can use it to tie a great caddis emerger. Here is a good run down of what you can use various feathers for... it for a pheasant, but works for partridge too. http://www.blueribbonflies.com/howto/flyty...asantskin.shtml Quote
Harps Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 Gartside Philo Caddis Emerger http://www.danica.com/flytier/tdidas/garts...dis_emerger.htm Quote
