Glenbow Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Marshall Pond (which is a lake). Got some really nice smallies with catatonic leeching Those smallies fight like the devil, lots of jumping & tail-walking. The water in rivers & lakes is all tea coloured, but vis is pretty good despite. Lotsa snapping turtles too, so you gotta watch your toes! Quote
dryfly Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Thanks. Love to see pix from elsewhere. Always fun to explore. Quote
Weedy1 Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Nice report Glenbow. I presume you came back with all your toes? Did you happen to see any of the smallies cruising in pairs? I have watched them swim like that on Van Island, the choreography is amazing. Quote
admin Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Nice looking Bronze back there. I love that rock, it looks like a perfect spot to fling from. Quote
esleech Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 OOOOooooo! Smallies! Those things are awesome! Quote
SteveM Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Sweet smallie! It's kinda funny how big some "ponds" are down East; we have ponds on Da Rock that you could fit 4 Alberta "lakes" in! Looks like an interesting trip. Quote
cdock Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Great pics man! On all the posts! Looks like a blast. Great report and good to see you had fun. Quote
Grizz Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Cat leeching for smallies....never would have guessed! Worked well did it? Quote
Guest rusty Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 That's a really nice smallie - I caught some smaller ones in BC and was blown away at how well they scrap. Those ones must have been a handful! Quote
Glenbow Posted July 24, 2007 Author Posted July 24, 2007 Honestly, I tries cat leeching as it has worked so well for me at home, so I gave it a try at the first likely looking spot to me on that lake (where I am in the pics) & within 5 minutes, whamm-o! That smallie fought like you wouldn't believe, and the aerials were nothing short of the best Bow Rainbow. Truly a huge blast on a 5wt, and a 4wt would have been even more fun. I had to keep moving looking for spots where the lake went from shallow to deep, & each place I tried like that I got a fish on, if not to net. It was tough fishing such unfamiliar water without any guidance at all, but it does show that even when you apply some lessons from home, it sometimes works. I undoubtedly would have caught tons more fish if I had hired a guide, but I didn't have the time nor the fixed schedule so I just went out when I could. It was quite rewarding to catch some fish both in rivers & lakes despite haveing no guidance. In the end, I would happily fly fish for smallies any day! They are not only agressive, but they fight pound for pound as good as any trout (that I have caught so far). Thanks for all the nice comments from you all, I took a lot of those photos (had my GF take them, that is) so I could show you all what it's like out there. Quote
rhuseby Posted July 24, 2007 Posted July 24, 2007 Thanks for the post and pics. I've only ever caught 4 tiny smallies from Surveyor's Lake near Fernie. Nice sandals, is that so the turtle bait shows up well in the water??????? Quote
