Lake Kookanusa

Anybody know much about fishing Kookanusa? Heading there for a couple of free days on a houseboat. Never been there before, but thought I should bring my rod/s and see what might be found out there. Any suggestions or recommendations would be most appreciated.

A whole bunch of views and no replies... I hate that, so I'll reply even though it's not much.

 

I've only fished ON Koocanusa once.. HUGE @SS lake.. so it can be tricky. We were using spinning rods and trolling with downriggers for salmon and/or large trout. Stayed a few hours with no success.

 

There are some good creeks in the area if you have a Backroads Mapbook.. not super familiar with the area though so make sure to check the regs to make sure they're open.

 

That's about all I can say.. not much help I know.

Most of the rivers are still open till oct 15 or oct 31... Lodgepole is totally closed and only a small section of the Wigwam is open due to bull trout spawning.

 

I was in fernie on the weekend and the river fishing was great some of the best days i have had.

 

I would phone some one like this to get the scope on the lakes

You could try for bull trout along the embankment at the bridge across Koocanusa. Streamers or lures work for the bull trout. Trolling for gerrard rainbows is best in the fall but is not a high percentage endeavour.

Dude park the boat along a deep shoreline and put a hook with corn on the bottom of the lake, and wait like 10 seconds. SO MUCH WHITEFISH! So much fun to catch too. I haven't seen whitefish like those though. They have a pretty large mouth compared to the ones I'm used to catching in the bow.

Thanks for your replies. Did try some fishing but it was dead, no bites, no whites, nothing, nada, nice place though........

Those aren't whitefish dude, those are what many refer to as "squaws". Hope you didn't eat any those things are nasty. There are tons of those in that lake.

I fished it from shore with a full sink with good success. Stripping in a small green scud. Lots of whitefish
