If you fish near me, or have seen the photos, you know that I wear a big hat, long sleeves, sun gloves and sunscreen. Nonetheless, I had a pre-cancerous lesion removed from my face yesterday. The doctor said it was due to damage done a long time ago, probably in my well-spent youth around swimming pools, canoes and horses. Or the bodybuilding phase when a tan was MORE than important. Oy!

Anyway, my new friends, plop a hat on the kids, wear sunscreen yourselves and don't razz those who do. Those of us with any combination of light hair, skin or eyes need to be especially vigilant. Supliment your diet with vitamin D to counter the lack of sunlight on your skin, if you have to.

Thanks for the reminder Sarah.

It's a good idea you had that lesion taken care of. My Uncle is going through some treatments for skin cancer for some spots he left too long.

i'm just curious...with everything that causes cancer nowadays, can you still flyfish from a plastic bubble??...it's getting to that point where we can't even do what we enjoy without worrying about getting cancer...crazy...

I'm convinced that BREATHING is a carcinogen these days.

Nope, they say that if you live long enough, you will get cancer.

But really, for fair skinned, fair haired or light eyed people, wearing sunscreen is not that big a sacrifice by comparison to losing chunks of your skin or your life.

For anyone who has had cancer or lost their life to it, it is a horrible experience, both for them and their loved ones. Therefore, I will mention an article I read this month in Consumer Reports on sunscreen. It is not only important to apply it, you need to make sure that it provides both UVA AND UVB protection. Part of the article talks about nano-technology where they use particulate in some sunscreens. Review the latest article and you will find excellent ratings for some and poor for others.

Being that I work for the Alberta Cancer Board, it is important for people to educate themselves to keep their good health for years to come. The best of health to everyone......cover up and use sunscreen. Cheers
