I always make a blanket generalization that virtually everything - except designated natural areas - is private land east of QE2, and crown land - especially crown land available to randomly camp on - is virtually non-existent. True?

Basically true. I think you're only loophole is an island on the river, there is some grazing lease land throughout the east but you still need permission from the leaseholder to camp.
