wheels
My sister and I are going backpacking in two weeks and the place we were planning to go in K-country will almost certainly be closed to access. The place we were planning to go to was about a 2 hour fairly easy hike in, then we would set up camp and fish the creek it was next to for a few days. We typically do this backpacking/fishing trip every year. The creek offered decent fishing and we rarely, if ever, saw another soul. Any suggestions on some places we could go? Looking for a very similar experience (2 hour hike, creek or lake with fishing opportunities, not too popular). No need to give away any secret fishing holes or anything, but just looking for some options. Within a 2 hour drive of Calgary would be preferred, but not a deal-breaker. PM if necessary. Thanks! ÜberFly
If you could do a little longer drive why not hit up Barnaby or Rainy Ridge for some Goldens?! If you do go, please don't have a fire... Lots of people chopping down green trees for wood and the ecosystem can't handle it!! Lots of options in Banff NP and Kootney NP... Just depends if you are wanting to keep or not and if you are willing to pay for a campsite...
Fred
There's quite a few lakes around the caroline area such as beaver lake and birch lake. I dont know how many are hike in but they maybe an option if you're willing to drive north.
Flashback
Here are some options along the David Thompson Highway: 1. Allstones Lake (5 km fairly steep: brookies) 2. Lake of the Falls (Cutts and bulls) (about 16-18 km, moderately easy terrain) 3. Landslide Lake/Entry Lake (cutts) (about 16 km, last 3 km is steeper, mostly easy/moderate terrain until last 3 km) 4. Kinglette Lake (cutts, catch and release) (about 4-5 km steady uphill with a few steep spots)
jstelfox
Big Iron Lake is another one to consider. Fish were rising when I replenished the supply of creel cards in the creel survey box on Monday, so the Arctic grayling we stocked in 2012 overwintered and should be about 25 cm long now. Depending on what route you take, the hike in will be about 1.5 to 2 hours, since the road is currently closed just past the turn off to the Indian Graves campground.
