ljpinnell Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Hi all, I am coming out to Calgary for the first time in late April. I was wondering if anyone had advice on effective patterns for that time of year in the Calgary area? I live in Toronto, and was hoping to tie some patterns before I leave. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance! Quote
Hawgstoppah Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 I don't have any specific links to tying patterns, but here would be my box: Bow River Bugger #4-8 Clousers in various size #2-10's ...in black/white... blue/white... dark olive/white... Leeches / Woolly Buggers - black, dark purple, dark green, etc San Juan Golden and brown chennille stonefly Hare's ear... Prince Nymph BWO nymph and dries #16-20 Midge clusters and chironmid (black zebra midge works really well for me some days) Caddis pupae... works REALLY good some warm April days... some of my best spring days ever have been on that fly. Hope that helps give you a start! Quote
ljpinnell Posted March 25, 2013 Author Posted March 25, 2013 That's a great start! Thanks so much. Quote
bjbailey Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 I'd say focus on BWOs and Midges, with a range of nymphs, emergers, and dries. April is actually one of my favorite months to fish as the fish go a little crazy the first few weeks of good hatches. Enjoy! Quote
ljpinnell Posted March 26, 2013 Author Posted March 26, 2013 Doesn't fit this thread, but if anyone is willing to PM me some decent locations to fish I'd really be set to go. Thanks again! Quote
SilverDoctor Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 A great place to start is Fish Creek Park, but to be honest I’ve fished most areas of the Bow and you can find fish everywhere, Google is your friend for access. Be sure to pick up a new license at the end of the month and read through you regs. Be courteous and be safe out there. Quote
