This is probably one of those things that is obvious, but not to me.

When turning material onto the fly how does one stop your thread from either winding onto or off the fly? I have been putting a half hitch in and then putting my bobbin on the rest but this only work sometimes.

Advice?

Ensure that the shank is on plain with the thread post; if you look at the thread from hook to post it should be level. If the thread is angled up or down it will either loosen your half hitch and / or wrap as you spin the hook.

Your problem also becomes more problematic with curved hooks; but the same rule applies.

Thanks I will give that a try. Now that I think about it, it was more problematic using some bent hooks.

My advice - Get a Nor-vise....problem solved.. surprised Flytyer did not suggest that!!

other then that the half hitches work best or if your materials lend themselves to it, twist your thread with the material to strengthen the material.
