Fish-farm Sea Lice More Widespread Than Thought

Recommended Posts

Salmon farms are transferring sea lice to wild salmon in a much larger area of British Columbia's coastal waters than first thought, according to new research by B.C. scientists.

Fisheries scientists have long linked salmon farms in the Broughton Archipelago, between the north end of Vancouver Island and the mainland, with the sea lice that wild juvenile salmon pick up as they migrate past farms on their way to the open ocean.

The latest study, published in the current issue of the peer-reviewed Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, shows juvenile salmon picking up sea lice throughout the Georgia Strait to the south and in Finlayson Channel on the Central Coast, northwest of Bella Coola.

How many studies does it take on anything to make government act?

honestly dude?

ask the average 'bye from nfld about the cod fishery collapse and the moratorium.

the decline began a long time before it collapsed. there was complelling scientific evidence as to the root cause [bottom trawling] for years before. dfo finally does manage to get a few things right occasionally.

but

the lack of funding to adequately patrol the 200 mile limit and the lack of balls on the part of the ruling feds at the time to take on the huge international consortium of mega trawling harvesters that caused the problem in the fisrt place because, well, it wouida been a lot of dough to spend and the other side has deeper pockets that the feds had the appetite to tax the entire country for to bail out da 'byes on da rock. and, well they occasionally made port in st. john's and bought fuel. so nfld, ya know, kinda sorta benefited.

so the answer is...

when the wild salmon stocks actually collapse, the feds will but a moratorium on fishing. for canadians. in canadian waters.

based on historical performance, i am in no way optimistic that the federal goverment will lift a goddam finger for wild salmon unless it became the #1 cross-country election issue.

or the international community put pressure on the gov't.

or if famous movie stars and the psychotic one-legged wives of aging rock stars showed up and organized and staged protests and international publicity campaigns.

oh, and btw?

now the feds have opened the inshore waters of nfld to commercial shrimp fishing to re-employ former cod fisherman.

the favoured method of harvest?

bottom trawling.

wow.

where's me rum...
