Ferris Indicator

In my search for better methods and tricks for fly fishing. I came across this neat little indicator by Rudi Ferris and absolutely love it. Thought I would share it with you all.

 

Just take a empty ink tube out of a ballpoint pen and cut it into (1to3mm) long pieces, longer will provide more friction on your leader to hold it in place better. You can use different sizes of tubes for bigger or smaller indicators.

 

 

Attaching the yarn is a piece of cake.

 

· Double the nylon and feed on a ring.

· Slide the ring down to open a large loop above it.

· Feed the yarn into the loop and slide the ring hard up against it.

· Now pull both ends of the nylon in opposite directions.

· If the correct thickness of yarn has been selected the ring will jump up and hold fast under tension.

· Try pulling the indicator up and down to see if it will stay put while you are casting.

· If not wrap the nylon one more time over the yarn before you pull the ring in place. It will hold really well.

 

It takes a bit of playing with them to select the right amount of yarn (or whatever you choose to use) for different size rings. After you play with it a little bit it gets a little easier to judge the amount you need. To much and the yarn won't snap into place, to little it just won't hold. It dosen't kink up your leader either and is very easy to adjust depth and take on and off as the situations change.

OK...even though I don't fish with an indicator like most of u and I use that term loosely, I'll give it a shot, cause I have quite a bit of tubing that I use to attach my English floats to when I'm centre pinning, so I'll try it when I go nymphing, which I think that's when I'll need it.........Wolfie

Does it provide enough floatation to not get sunk by having 2 or 3 weighted nymphs on the line?

If you used a bigger sized tube you could make it hold up quite a bit of weight. If you keep your yarn in a film container or something like that, soaking in floatant that helps too. I have stopped using 3 flies because I tend to foul hook too many fish. But I haven't had a problem fishing 2 flies with this setup. Check out the "Super Hopper Dropper" in the fly tying section, if you want to suspend a lot of weight.

There you go Bandee. Thats on 3X I could have pulled in quite a bit more yarn than i did. You would be using it higher up on your leader where its thicker and a lot easier to get it to stay in place, takes a bit of trial and error to get it right. Once you get a feel for it though its pretty handy. Nice thing too it doesn't kink your leader up and very easy to adjust and take on and off. Forgot to add its a heck of a lot cheaper than buying indicators and you can use many different types of tubing. Goose quill even if you like the natural matierial.
