Hi, firstable, I have hesitated to post that question here or in "other rivers", but as I need an explanation from someone who knows Alberta s streams, it seems OK. Anyway, 2 years ago, I started flyfishing, and I used to go on Threepoint creek. Fishing was great, every hole, every fallen tree was hosting rainbows. For sure, small guys (with 13 inches as "record")... Last year, I couldn t get out as many times as I wanted, and I ve been there a couple of time in september/october, with no luck at all (except a small 5-6 incher obviously lost...). No risers, no strike...nothing. I tried this morning and again, I fish...and nothing else. I m not talking that I landed one and missed a lot...I saw one, landed one and...nothing else. I m not complaining, nor asking for other creek (I m starting to know where I can find some fish...), and there always is the Bow, with a lot of fish. The truth is that I love fishing small rivers, where pleasure is not only in the size of the fish. I just want to undertand : WHAT HAPPENED ????? I noticed that the river profile changed a lot after run off (some pools disappeared, different runs...). But, fish are not used to it ? I just want to understand better how it works...Thanks for any explanation you can give me.

I ve been ther two times in june. A LOT of fish rising BUT a few of them taking a dry, which maintains things fun. Though, only small guys (cutt) about 10/12 inches. Last time, I ve been with my 2 kids (4 and 6) and it was a lot of fun. My daughter took 3 fish and even my son took one on his shrek rod (certainly astraving trout) !! They both fished with worms. Aotherwise it s very nice, you can see eagle fishing and with the sunset a castor. Hope this can hlep you. This smiley is pointless but I love it !

Thanks for the advice... I would have tried a LOT bigger than these sizes...As I m a beginner I tend to think "The bigger the fly, the bigger the catch"...I should start thinking like a trout... Anyway, I can t wait to try... thanks again

Hi guys! I should give a try this week in a stream I use to fish...I always fish with dry but with the cold coming, maybe the fish will be more at the bottom of the pool... It could be an opportunity for me to first try nymphing and change my mind about it...Some of you says that it produces more and bigger fish... Anyway...could you tell me which pattern would be effective at this time of year? Thanks...

It s a good thing to know...Though, I always carry a bearspray (if it can help...) Anyway, if it s gorgeous I ll see next september!!

Well, I ve never been there so I was thinking to go at the end of the road (Little elbow campground I think) then hike to find spots. in regs they say cutts and bulls until 1 Lb but I wanted to be sure that people actully take some fishes out of there; Any advice welcome...

I want to try the little elbow tomorrow. Is it anything to catch in there (because I could read that the elbow is not a good fishery)? Does it worth the trip or better go where I use to (event if I catch little rainbows on dry it s still a lot of fun for me and I noticed that now the fish is not in the same spots than summer....I m learning!!) Anyway, thanks for any advice!

Rickr, I see your point and next season I ll try nymphing. But as other people wrote it, fishing with an indicator is very close from other technics with other type of rod (and more efficient in term of casting). In my mind, flyfishing is just a line and a fly...But that s me... Anyway, thanks for your share, you gave an interessant point of view (Plus, I didn t have so much success than you did...)

Hi!! i m a newbie myself and it s my first year in Canada and as a fly angler. I started flyfishing by the end of july and my first times on the river were nice but with nothing besides flies in the trees... I read a lot of great advice on this forum (in this topic or others...) but I want to share my recent experience with you and tell what worked for me. Of course, I realize that i m very far for the most of the guys here...But I really enjoy this sport (I ve tried a lot of type of fishing : carp (is there any in the Glenmore reservoir?), pike, saltwater from the beach, boat... Nothing than you can compare with fishing with a flyrod). Also, I ve to be modest because my biggest fish landed was a 13 inches rainbow trout and I know it s possible to catch a lot bigger!! Though, I caught fish every time I ve been in the water (except one time. the water was very "dirty" (muddy?")) and even if fishes were small (between 7 to 13) I really enjoyed it. I ll try to explain, as a newbie, mu tries and choices. i dont know if it can be hlpfull for someone but I want to share it. I tried to fish with nymphs but honestly guys, it may be more effective, but it s so much difficult. You dont see the fly, you dont know where teh fish is (the bigger the river the bigger the difficulty...) and I dont talk about the catch of the fly...If it s for striking every time something happen on the indicator....I think you lose part of the fun. Advantage of fishing with a dry is you see it...You see when it drags...when you are too far from what you thing water holding a fish, you see the catch, even if you miss the fish, you have some hope. After that, you can wonder "why did I miss him?" and try to figure it out and improve... Second tought would be fishind in small river or stream. Same things that have been said. easier to read it, to see the fish rising...Fish smaller less picky...easier to catch....And water with less people (you cant ask of course but fishes didnt learn to recognize all that mademan flies...). And I want to finish saying as a newbie, that it s difficult sometimes (the most of the time I leran so much reading posts here !) to read you guys talking about 25 inch. monsters, seeing photos with real monsters...But I think a newbie must to be realistic and dont think too much about catching this kind of fish (even if I m between the phase 2 and 3 ). Anyway, good luck to you and I hope you ll catch your first fish before the end of the season... And I want to thank you all for your time and for sharing your knowledge.

I want to Thank everybody for the help... I listen everyone of you and I opted for small creeks...Thanks to one of you I used an adams pattern, I get up early and gave a shot. And it worked...I caught 8 rainbows...Of course, thats small one we re talking about (the biggest (or less small ) was 10 inches...The first one was really small so 10 inches seemed good to me... . It was my first fishes and I can tell you I missed a lot!!! I leraned a lot of things and it s really easier in small streams because it s easier to read the river...The cast is easier to (except for the dense vegetation sometimes...). I must add that I was very pleased and enjoyed it a lot...I even took the last one with a very bad imitation of adams of my own (I decided to try because I had already caught enough fish. More than I have dream of)... Of course, seeing all your photos with trophy fishes...It s hard to catch a baby fish!!! But, one day, when I m ready, I will try the bow...But no now ! I wnat to finish answering to some questions : Christofficer : I fished in the elbow, upstream of glenmore reservoir. But I realize now I wast necesarly putting my fly on good spots. But I was fishing with a dry because with a nymph or a streamer was too difficult. And I prefer to see the fly and the catch! I think I ll try little creek with little fishes easier (??) too catch...First I was thinking in hopper/dropper but when I try it seemed very difficult because You have to focus on the cast and everything else (for example, it s already hard to see the flight at the begining so it almost impossible to be aware of whats wrong! ). I ll let you know if I land something...(a sucidal fish maybe...) Thanks again.

Hi everybody! First, I want to say it s nice to meet you all and that I ve been reading the different posts and I really enjoyed it. It s really nice to have people who know what they re talking about. Second, if you find I have a "funny way" to write you re right!! It s because I m from France. Actually it s my first year in Canada and in Calgary (so it was my first winter, first rockies, first bear...). So, i hope you understand everything I want to say. Otherwise, just tell me... i m writing because I need your help...I decided to try flyfishing (I dream about it since I m 15 but I was living in Paris and in France the few rivers with trout are ine the south...I ve been fishing since then but other species like pike, carps...). I ve been practicing my casting first then I ve been trying to fish the Elbow. I read here that it s not the one holding the biggest trout population...Anyway, I think I cast correctly (most of the time ) and I tried to fish with hopper pattern. I gave a shot with nymph but it s too difficult. I need some help. In fact, I just need at this stage a spot where it s sure to land some fish. I must to figure out what the problem is. If you send me to a place where I don t even have a strike, and where it s sure that anybody could fish something, then I would know that the problem...it s me!! I can tell I need a little of confidence. Obviously, I m not looking for a trophy trout so the size of the fish doesn t mattter (I dont fish for eating - there some less expensive and easier way to eat fish - and I release)!! Well, I m waiting for any advice or suggestion
